After Effects 5.5 codec issue with dvd turned to avi.

Postby Moonman » Sat Aug 12, 2006 11:50 am

Last year, I had a friend of mine burn two of my dvd's to avi's so I could chop 'em up a bit for some AMV's. It worked peachy and I got about two thirds the way through the editing before an unrelated problem forced me to format my drives and re-install windows. I saved all my crap, but when I started working on the amv again, it gave me this message upon opening the project:

After Effects error: no such AVI compressor.

Then it showed the file as a blank white screen. I recently had to reformat again (and again I saved everything) and now it doesn't even acknowledge that the files are there anymore.

Both avi's open fine in both WMP and Winamp, so it's not like I don't have the proper codecs. Frankly, I don't have any clue what's going on.

Any ideas?

Just out of curisoity, what codecs are the videos in? Even if you have the codecs installed, it may be related.

Formattting apart (since the error changed between formats) did you reinstall AE?

Try opening the AVIs through AviSynth (there's a way to do that in AE, search the forums here and you'll find it somewhere  )

1) That's the thing. I don't know how to find out. I do know it plays in WMP, WinAmp and my VLC player.

2) I didn't 'install' it the first time actually. It was a folder with the after effects already setup inside it. I just copy/pasted into my adobe folder.

3) Don't know what that is either. Is it freeware?

You'll have to forgive me, I know absolutely nothing about the technical side of videos.

Download this and this and read this. Or, find out what codec the videos are in and I continue to troubleshoot for you.

To find that out, open your video files with GSpot.
