Cropping a video

Postby jamklev » Sun Aug 06, 2006 5:02 pm

My friend and I are making an AMV, but the only problem is, that anime we are using is .AVI with subtitles on it. What I want to know is, is there a program that could crop the video when we finish with it so we can just cut the subs off? We are currently using Windows Movie Maker, and if there's a way to use that, I would like to know. (I know we shouldn't be using Movie Maker, but that's all we have right now...) Thank You!

Fansubs... no.

But I'll help out. Okay, make your AMV as normal, yadda yadda export yadda yaddda...

Now, get the following things:

CCCP: http://delta.movax.org/cccp/Combined-Co ... -07-28.exe
AVIsynth: http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/avis ... e?download
VirtualDubMod: http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/virt ... p?download

Set AVIsynth to assosciate AVS files with notepad when it asks. That should be the only installation question for all that stuff.

Okay, now. Open VirtualDubMod. Go to the open menu, and select "DirectShowSource" from the drop-down list in the bottom-left. Now set filetypes to "All Files" and open your WMV. Voila, a WMV in VirtualDub.

Now go to Filters. If you just wanna crop, Add a filter, then add "null filter" or whatever the null option is. Then click cropping and adjust.

Someone else can help you with anything after that as resolution and stuff is dependant on source and crap... I can't just give you a miracle solution, I can only tell you how to access the tools you'd need to crop.

Best of luck.

instead of cropping the video, y dont u letterbox it. looks a lil better.

here's a guide on how to do that
http://www.rockmanamv.com/crop.php

all u need is virtualdubmod. if u r making this in WMM then u need a converter to convert to avi format or u can use Avisynth like shiro_clanclan suggested

Don't add letterboxing after cropping unless you're using 4:3 footage in other parts of the vid. It's a waste of bits to encode black bars.

How to get a .avi out of WMM. You'll probably want to look into some post-processing with AviSynth too--WMM can do a number on video quality.

Ummmmm... and just in case DV-AVI doesn't work for you (doesn't work for me, causes glitchy audio and lost synch), you can always just get this:

Windows Media Encoder 9

...and create a profile that will output a true uncompressed WMV. Uncompressed video and audio. Then feed that into AVIsynth/VirtualDub and convert to like... HuffYUV and do post-processing.

I usually go Uncompressed WMV-->Post-processed HuffYUV-->h264 for online distro now. Works. And you can always just replace the Huff step with XviD if you want.

But yeah. Keepin' the options open.
