Cheap/basic Software for a newbie

Postby Ms pilot » Sun Jul 23, 2006 1:32 pm

I just got into the world of AMV and need some basic/Cheap software that is good for a bigginer like me.

I've done fansubs for japanesse music videos like Asian kung-fu Generation and T.M. Revolution.

So i have movie maker and i have no ideas how to rip from dvds and all i have to watch dvds is a VLC player and can't figure out how to rip footage.

So I'm all ears for suggestion, I only a highschool student who makes $15 a week on allowance and i'm looking for stuff that's FREE or under $50 maybe $75 in software.

Well, Please post suggestions and links

For dvd's I use dvdshrink, extract as vob files, change vob to mpeg then use virtual dub to change the mpeg to avi, these all all downloadable off the net and are free programs  If dvdshrink does not work then I will use dvd decrypter which is also a free program.

I would suggest DVD Decrypter over DVD Shrink--both work, but Decrypter is probably a bit better for the job.

You don't purchase online, which means you're going to have a tough time finding good and inexpensive software. You can find cheap software, and you can find good software in stores (especially in the likes of Fry's etc), but you'll either be purchasing crappy software (most editing suites in your price range that are available in stores are crap), or you'll be payinf outrageous amounts for software like Premiere or Final Cut Studio, or even spending more than your alloted budget (at least $100 or more) for Ulead MediaStudio and the like.

The N00biest N00b of them all!!

Postby LeperDoctor » Thu Jul 27, 2006 8:35 pm

Hey all!! Um, yeah, I need a little pointer. ^^ I have this awesome music video planned out in my head- along with the ideas for many, many others- but I'm missing one thing; software!!

There's a huge number of brand names floating around here, but I noticed most of them are for conversion, compression, etc...I need something that can:

>Take clips from DVDs and piece together
>Something with layers so I can show at least two different scenes at once
>Cool transition effects!!
>Maybe some special effects? (Like turning the scenes black and white, etc...)
>And a place to stick music so it's cool. ^^

Is there one software thingie that can do these five things? I looked up adobe photoshop premiere (because I know adobe uses layers), and I found version 3.0 for a reasonable price. What are your guys' thoughts? My parents get freaked out if I download too many things from the net at once, so if there was one program for a reasonable price that could do this, that would make me a happy person. ^^ Please help!!

No editor that I know of will take clips from a dvd, they will how ever do all the other stuff you asked for, I have never used adobe but most likely it will and vegas does, most of them except wmm which is limited.

You will need dvdshrink or dvd decrypter or some program like that to actually get the clips off the dvd

You are an angel. -.^ Thank you so much!! Man, I've been trying to use my WMM for over an hour, and I was getting really frustrated because I couldn't take the clips I wanted from the DVD. Heh. that makes sense. ^^ I'll go download that now. Thanks!

One more thing wmm will not except vob/mpeg so you will have to use a program such as virtual dub or rad tools to change it to avi

Ah, this is why people need lots of programs for anime music video making!! That's cool. ^^ So...DVDshrink + virtual dub + program = cool music videos!! Works for me!! ^^ Thanks again!!

DVD Decrypter is a better choice than DVD-Shrink. The whole poiny of DVDShrink is the shrink a larger DVD source to places on a normal 4.7 DVD+/-R. You do not need to do this.

You need to read my sticky. If you have any further questions, you can ask me.
