The problem is that you lack things which would assist us in helping you. Like what OS you're using, what version of WMP you're using, your system specs... all the fancy technical stuff that we like. XP

Being a guy who sees lots of video problems... I'll try my standard "it's not your player, it's your codecs" approach, assuming your system isn't teh suck. Try uninstalling all of your codecs, then installing CCCP instead.

CCCP Site

That'll fix your playback woes... if it's codec-related.

codec pack = bad (most of the time)
usually you can just find what you want by googling it.

2 icons you say...sounds like ffdshow.
FFDshow is nice, but can cause conflicts with other codecs.
If you have a codec that can play a cetain file type (such as avi) you should turn off that file association in ffdshow

open the decoder settings, click on codecs
scroll through the settings until you find something that you know/think you already have another codec for
click on the decoder field, and change it from libavcodec to disabled or the other option if avaliable

if that doesn't work, you may have to uninstall ffdshow and re-install it (after you get everything working again)

CCCP = amazing. Not only that, but it's programmed to not interfere with VfW.

So keep CCCP--it's just for PLAYBACK. I saw nothing in your post about AMV stuff... so pardon me.

For the AMV side of things (editing programs), just install XviD/Huff/etc. over top of CCCP. Your editing programs, which use VfW codecs, will default to these instead. That's how my computer runs.

Normally I'd agree that codec packs are evil. It took me a long time before I tried CCCP... and I can honestly say that it's the best thing out there for playing media without screwing the hell out of your computer.

(If you already changed settings like the previous post... well... not much I can say except uninstall everything, reinstall CCCP, reinstall Xvid/Huff/etc... XP)
