You'll get alot of suggestions; and i think this should be in the software section.

but anyhow I use Cyberlink PowerDirector Express, which I think is free software and its done me well, can't do transition effects or anything like that without putting it through another program.

Anyhow all my AMV we're done with that.

Adobe seems to be the norm, and easily downloadable over bittorent (not that i'm saying you should - but it'll make you're head explode if its for a first video)

good luck and practice makes perfect

Even saying you CAN is stretching the rules. :/

And for clarity's sake the editing program is Premiere. Adobe makes several other products that are useful, such as Photoshop and After Effects.

If you want to make a good AMV you can use any program because quality depends on the skill and imagination of the guy sitting at the helm... though if you're just a beginner and you already have WMM then just use that until you get some monies or know someone who can hook you up with the better and more powerful Non Linear editing tools like Vegas and Premiere

Glad you're encouraging new editors to "reach for the stars," but I'm afraid this simply is not true. Garbage in, garbage out. Quality depends a lot on what you start off with and how an editor allows you to control that quality. The good news is that much of this can be accomplished outside of your editing suite by pre- and post- processing, but just expecting that because you have heart you'll be able to overcome the issues of lack of quality control is simply blindfully ignorant.

Well, in some ways true, but in the end it all depends on skill and no editor is skillful right out the box. Before anyone can 'make the good amv' they gotta hone that skill and if telling them that a program will 'make their amv great' then that's basically lying to their face. You gotta master your skill before you can go around and start making the 'good' amvs.

From what I've seen, WMM is simply cutting and pasting and anyone can make a fairly average AMV with that. Its all on the hands of the editor, NOT the program. I've seen some pretty shitty videos created with Premiere and Vegas heh

Kionon some amazing things can be done with basic level editors, when you're robbed of hundreds of flash effect imagination and innovation really come into play.

have some faith

To do amazing things with low-level editors requires knowledge that newbie editors are unlikely to have.

If you're not sure whether you want to sink lots of money into making AMVs (buying the DVDs and CDs doesn't count unless it's specifically for source :P ), Magix's video editors are cheap and good value for money. MEP10+ (UK version) is apparently a very good program, but I've only played around with the keyframing since installing it so I can't vouch for its quality. Seems to work pretty similar to MEP2004, which is good for newbies because all the intimidating options are hidden away in the menus.

I use Magix and I can vouch for the quality. My dad bought it for me as a birthday present and it works well despite some minor annoyances, most of which can be turned off pretty easily. It's not like Adobe Premiere in terms of some of the fancier features but you can do some pretty impressive stuff with a creative mind and patience. I would recommend it after something like WMM as a good transitioner and good for playing around and figuring out how to do different things. So it has my vote if you want to move to higher level software.

Note: I only buy anime when I need to use it as source. I gave up buying anime years ago and have sold pretty much all of my DVDs except those which are my absolute favorites.
