Wikis and the Like

Postby greenjinjo » Thu Jul 13, 2006 11:18 am

I know this doesn't technically fall under an AMV-related topic, so if it's too off topic, then I apologize

I'm taking part in a project with a professional conference who is looking to gather information from speakers/guests that will be attending the conference, such as names, phone numbers, information on their presentation, etc. We also need to be able send out checklist reminders and other key information using the information gathered above.

I've been told that a good place to start looking into something like this would be Wikis. I'm just mainly looking for suggestions of any type of website/computer program/database that might be able to do this easily. I figured I'd ask around here as there are quite a few computer-literate people around :P

Any help would be appriciated!

For amv hell champtionship edition, i made a free wiki at http://www.wikispaces.com/

It doesnt run the same software as wikipedia, so its a little different, and not very configurable. If you just need a simple page that people can freely edit, its probably the way to go though. Its free hosting for it too.

If you want a more full-blown wiki, you would want to run the mediawiki software on a server. You can get it at http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/MediaWiki

Hmmm for what you are describing, a simple html form that will send you an email might suffice, if the data doesnt need to be viewable by everyone. You can make free email forms for your site at http://www.bravenet.com/webtools/emailfwd/index.php

Ah, sorry, forgot to mention that. It does need to be viewable by all. Thanks for the links on the wikis, I'll check that out.

attendr.com looks interesting, but might not do everything you want it to.
Meetup.com is a popular site, but it is more hobby/interest oriented.
