Console Emulation Footage

Postby DJ_Izumi » Thu Jul 13, 2006 1:06 am

So I'm sitting here listening to every Atomix of Atom Bomb by Fluke and I get into my head the idea of Haruhi (Meloncholy) being 'Baby', like the purple haired girl in the real Atom Bomb music video. With Haruhi playing video games mixed with footage of Wipeout XL for PSX (This was also done in Atom Bomb since Atom Bomb was part of Wipeout XL's sound track).

Naturally, I need Wipeout XL footage. I have Wipeout XL but analog capture of it from a PSX/2 would, well, blow. My obvious solution then would be to use an emulator and capture frames.

Now does anyone have any suggestions for this? I've never done this and I'm almost not sure what would work. Could I run the emulator AND dump to lossless frames without dropping frames? I think I could lock the emulator to 24fps and it would look okay, or would that look laggy even if I was targeting it for video rendering? I'm just looking for some advice as to how to do this since I've never done it before and I hope some people have experiance.

For capturing, try using fraps, and if that doesnt work, camtasia or something similar.

For the emulator, yea, id try limiting the framerate to 24, or whatever the framerate of your final video would be. Unless of course, you plan to slow your footage down, at which point a higher framerate would be useful. Also dont turn on any unnecessary stuff in the emulator, and run it at the normal psx resolution instead of upsizing it.

Well I thought that I would use some visual enhancements from the emulator to make the video took better but I'd force the video to 704x480 and crop it to 704x352 to match the Haruhi footage.

ePSXe has it's own capture device and I'll be giving that a shot but I'm pretty sure I'll need to use my desktop to run ePSXe -and- capture at the same time. I wonder if hufYUV is fast enough to capture and run an emulator at the same time...

Well according to wikipedia, PSX games ran at resolutions ranging from 256×224 to 640×480. So i would just try to run and capture it at the native resolution, and then upsize it later.
