Who says he can't distro in 720p? XviD or DivX 720p arn't that depending in terms of CPU power anyway. He'd only be really shutting out people if he used h.264

I'm not sure if I want to do a 720p distro yet. My question should I downsize the raws to MPEG2 @ 640x352 for editing. And if it is possible to swap out the reencodes with the original for the final rendering in Vegas 6

If it doesn't lag, then yes. Do you need to edit your video at 1280x720?

I don't use Vegas myself, but file-swapping works. Check this thread.

I think the vast majority of editing programs will fall for the renaming / redirecting trick. The EADFAG mentions one version of Premiere, or maybe Premiere Pro, that's strict about file-swapping, but that's the only one I've heard of. Any others?
