huffy help

Postby Unlimited Rice » Tue Jul 04, 2006 5:09 pm

ok, so yeah, I exported a huffy avi file out of premiere and then I encoded to xvid.

Now I want to delete that huffy file, but whenever I single click it, it crashes Windows Explorer on me before I could hit the delete button...

(This has happened with several huffy clips, and sometimes, it crashes when I just open a folder to a huffy clip)

is there any explanation behind this?

Well, I don't know what is causing it, but I bet I know how you can delete it. Try opening Windows in Safe Mode and you should be able to delete it then without it crashing Windows Explorer. Keep hitting F5 while your computer is booting up and it should bring up a menu that will give you the option to open Windows in Safe Mode.

There's also the option of deleting through the command prompt...

Start-->All Programs-->Accessories-->Command Prompt

then,

cd\(full path to your file here)

ex: cd\documents and settings\shiro\amv output

then,

del (filename of video you want to delete here)

ex: del amv5huff.avi

Voila. I love DOS, even if it's just emulated.

I have always had all kinds of problems with huffyuv. Recently I've switched over to lagarith and all problems went away. So I say dump huffyuv and start using lagarith! ^_^

Random question, are the folders set to show thumbnails? If you change them to 'list' there are no previews to lock up the comp. That should keep the folders from crashing as soon as you open them to delete the files in windows. You can also save disposable huffyuv files to their own folder so its easy to delete them when you're done with them - by deleting the entire folder.

Won't work. Even if you set a folder to list view and classic display mode, Windows Explorer will attempt to create a thumbnail for the explorer window despite the fact that you can't see it. That's why when he clicks on the file, it crashes Explorer.

The list sorta worked, it gave me time to delete, but waiting too long would still cause it to crash.

but yeah, being in 'list' doesn't make the entire folder crash. thx

Sure. I got that problem with some wierdly compressed files, and way-too-large files. It's either the preview issue in that thread anubisx00 linked, or a memory issue in windows. I get the same thing any time I try to highlight and delete too many large files at once (even tga picture files), so I'm leaning toward memory problems more than codec issues. That's why I save soon-to-be-deleted files in thier own folder. It's so much simpler to delete the folder than to mess with the files types and filter priorities and the like. ^_^;;
