Starting to make AMVs. Need some help.

Postby NoodleRama » Sat Jul 01, 2006 4:18 pm

Alright, well I basically know how to make movies and such on Windows Movie Maker, and I know how to cut and splice and add sound and to take away audio and such, but I do need some help.

How exactly do I get my anime from my DVDs onto WMM? I tried just importing the video, but it won't work that way. Any suggestions?

Use a DVD ripping program like DVD Decrytor, then take the files it rips to VirtualDubMod and make them into Avis. THEN you can import them.

Ha, I wish it was just as easy to "Import".

Note that AMVApp no longer contains DVD Decrypter (unless things changed the last time I checked)

VOB to AVI

Postby Cloyce » Tue Jul 04, 2006 4:54 pm

Now you must import the Decrypted VOB files in VirtualDubMOD
or VirtualDub MPEG-2, but DON'T try to import them into the
BASIC VirtualDub, since it doesn't support the MPEG-2 Stream
generally used for DVD.

Now, you must convert the MPEG-2 stream contained in the VOB files
to another video streams compliant with AVI format
such as Hyffyuv, uncompressed, MJPEG ecc..

Personally, I never use codec such as "Huffyuv" because it takes too
much space on the HardDrive, and if the read-speed of your HD is
not very fast, you will get same delay problem in the editing phase.

I suggest you to use a MJPEG codec, just download "ffdshow", it's free
you must only set the encoder to MJPEG then set the encoding method to "1 pass - Quantizer" and then set the quantizer to "1" as parameter to get the highest quality possible.
Remember, the MJPEG codec included in FFDSHOW can give you only a
"almost lossless" encoding quality, and in my opinion it is enough
since your want to pubblish your video on the web.

Very Important things:

1 - Very probably, you have to deinterlace your DVD video footage
(if you don't know what does it mean intarlaced video, search it on the web), sometimes, VirtualDubMOD will automaticly apply the "3:2 pulldown-inverse" tecnique to deinterlace your video, but if it doesn't
do it, you must apply a deinterlace filter manually.
+ Video > Filters > add

2 - Insure that :
+ Options > Display Input
+ Options > Display Output
are both selected, this will take your work easy.

3 - Remember, in VirtualDub you never have to encode the entire video,
but you can always select the portion of video that you need
with the In/Out buttons, and then launch the encoding process.

4 - For persons like me, VirtualDub seems to be a very easy application,
but it can be a quite tricky for newbies, so try to understand how
it works before starting.

5 - If you have DivX installed on your system, go to the
DivX Decoder Configuration menu and disable these options:
"Support decoding for generic MPEG-4 video"
"Show DivX logo watermark"

6 - Don't forget to correct the Aspect Ratio when you encode
some video footage, use Virtual Dub filters or the image-processing
ability of FFDSHOW codecs.
Don't confuse Pixel Ratio with Display Ratio and with
Video Size Ratio (ex. 720 divide 480 = 1.5, I call this Video Size Aspect Ratio)

7 - Try to export in AVI-XviD or AVI-DivX if possible, because MacOS
users and some Linux users can't play correctly WMV3 videos.

8 - When you export in AVI, don't forget to COMPRESS the video,
and above all, don't forget to COMPRESS the AUDIO!!
(use a MP3 codec)
Some people seems really to forget to compress the AUDIO,
and they let it to PCM (read WAV!).
IMPORTANT: It's not recommended to compress VBR or ABR
MP3 streams with VirtualDub, just use CBR mode for compressing
Audio in MP3.

I Finished ^^ I hope my informations helped you.
As you can see, my english is not very good, so if you don't understand something, ask me.
