File Troubles...

Postby y2kwizard » Sun Nov 17, 2002 4:14 pm

Hello all. If this is a little bit too off the subject, then please beat me, but I think it's close enough.

I've been trying to clean up my external FireWire hard drive for a big project that I've got coming up. I've been able to delete all of my unnecessary files except for one...it's about 700 MB and somehow or another, it got corrupted. And so, now, when I try to delete the file, I get an error message saying that another program is using that file, and to try to close all unnecessary programs and try again. I've closed them all, but nothing doing.

I guess I could reformat the hard drive, but I'm told the hard drive has its drivers on the hard drive itself, and reformatting might screw me over.

By the way, the HD is a fireline 20GB HotDrive by Evergreen Technologies.
I guess I'll try to find out more information on the drive.

In the meantime, does anyone have any other suggestions? Thanks a lot!

Well, first of all, what's your operation system?
And have you looked already for downloadable drivers for your FireWire HD? Because when there are ones available, you could just format it and reinstall.

Make sure you have no P2P software running that you don't know about :p How to do that I don't know. Kill any apps you're not using.

If you're using Win2k/xp, goto the task manager and end task on explorer. Then goto File|new task, type explorer.

It should relaunch the ol taskbar. Then try deleting the file again.

You can also use Process Explorer to find out what program is using that file, then you should be able to kill it and delete it.

I've had this problem quite a few times in Win2k it's really strange. Say if I am using VirtualDub or Premiere and I exit out of the program and I want to delete a file I was using it will tell me it's still in use.

Though I haven't had that problem as much since I upgraded to SP3.

Make sure the file is not your swap file. Then systematicly kill all processes that windows will let you. Then reformat.
