doom9 for one
for low bitrate stuff though here's the breakdown
mpeg < wmv8 < rm8 < wmv9 < rm9

theres just no reason to use it when there are far superior codecs around these days

here, make your own judgements on this torture clip. All of them were encoded at 500 kbps

ACK >_< make it go away!!!

How about when in motion. Video would be something to see to believe. I had alot of experiences with Real where it was nice and clear, but at a wonderful 0.5fps. Whoo!

@ 500Kbps, I expect it is pretty smooth while looking sharp ^_^ ?

i havent seen real9 drop any frames, wmv is the highest frame-drop candidate of all of them and even then its only dropped them at like 160 kbps
all of the videos the examples were taken from were totally fluid (and this was easy to judge as the scene is a bunch of flashing lights)
as for the actual difference between stills and motion, well, at 500 kbps they pretty much look like they do here :\

Question - how'd you take the frame captures of the AVIs, WMVs, and RMs? Did you screen capture after their assorted post-processing algos? How did you take the RM screenshot as opposed to the AVI ones? Just would like to check, as I though I'm not familiar with RV9 that much I wonder how you took that screenshot without opening it in realplayer?

AVI - VDub
WMV - avisynth directshowsource + VDub
RM - EOvideo to uncompressed AVI + VDub

Whether EOvideo decodes with or without postprocessing I'm not sure, wmv will have been postprocessed, and I suppose I could cap the xvid and divx versions after postprocessing, as that would be more fair after all. I'll use mplayer post with all deblocking and deringing options on and post those versions in a minute

well here they are. Now the problem is that thanks to Real and M$ this is more of a postprocessing competition than anything. Of course, when considering a codec for download, one must consider how it will look to the viewer. So it is a valid comparison but is not a display of the true codec.

To top it off I've got a psd file containing all the different postprocessed codecs on separate layers. I'll post it as soon as I can log onto the damn digitalinsanity server ¬¬

I'd be curious to see the Frame using DivX5's playback filter, since that's the target for all my XviD encodes anyways. Also, I would suggest using the original DivX3.11a's DShow filter for playback of DivX3 material for best looking image quality, as that has been my experience (albeit it's a pretty subjective measure).
