Codec-Specific Error

Postby EarthCurrent » Mon Nov 11, 2002 3:05 am

I'm about ready to pull my hair out here, so I need some help

I just ripped and converted a series of DVD .vob files using Avisynth to open the .vob files in VirtualDub so I could convert the MPEG2s into .AVI format. I used Intel Indeo 4.3 as the compression Codec while saving. To make sure the process worked, I opened my first few small AVI files in Win Media Player and they looked and played great, no problems, so I proceeded, over the course of this weekend to convert nearly 5 hours of DVD footage to AVI format, still using the Indeo codec.

However, just this evening I decided to try and open one of these AVI files up in Virtual Dub. However, the program would not read the files and instead I got a message stating:

"Error Decompressing video frame 0
A codec-specific error occurred
(error code 1)"

Curious, I tried to bring the footage into a couple different cheap little video editors I have on my computer (windows movie maker and Magix plus), but in both cases the footage comes out "black" as though there is no picture. However, I can still watch the footage in WinMedia, so there is obviously something wrong with the codec--I think--but I'm not savvy enough to know exactly what to do.

I'd just redo the footage, but I just spent a weekend creating these AVIs and I don''t want to just dump them. Though I fear that is what I am going to have to do.

Would a reinstallation of the Indeo Codec possibly fix this, and if so where can I get this codec for download?

Thanks for any help.

First of all you probably screwed up all your precious kwality by using the shit known as indeo. I don't really know what is causing your problem, can you get it back into VirtualDub? Either way, I would just dump it. Indeo is very very sucky.

If you're short on space you can do what Zarxrax did and uhh, use XviD, which wile sucky to use for editing, is way better then lamo indeo.

Actually a better idea would be to follow the guides and use the method involving the making of a low kwality mjpeg file, then replacing it with a avs file. Then do all your clipping in your video editor. Although this method is more bias towards you using Premiere and may not work with another program.

http://www.ligos.com/indeo.htm

That's the latest Indeo. It's not lossless, but that one did wonders for me when it was the only known alternative to uncompressed.

There was one issue with this codec however. If you try to play any indeo files with media player that aren't 640 X 480, 320 X 240, etc, the colors will mess up and won't play correctly. Regardless of the dimensions, all indeo files did manage to look fine in any video editing software I could use at the time.

It was a decent codec over a year ago, with quality ramped all the way up, but the exporting did take freakin forever.

Thanks to both of you. I decided to dump the old AVIs. I have no idea what exactly was going on with them, and I am redoing all my captures in HuffYUV even though the this format will wind up taking up half my HD space. Ah well, I checked and this works so appearantly it's a problem my computer is having with the Indeo codec.
