just starting out

Postby marquis24 » Wed Nov 06, 2002 11:21 pm

hi i am just starting out doing anime movies an dthis will be my first.
I need help with getting the right software and hardware.
Anything under $2000 is oof no concern.

Right now i have an dell inspirion 8000 laptop
8oomhz pentium 3 ,256mb of ram built in dvd, swapable cd burner 20gig harddrive, 15inch ultra xga screen, ati mobilitya4 video card (i think),

Iam geetting ready to buy adobe after effects and adobe premire.
I am also going to buy a cam corder.

Myquestions are what should i look for in a camcorder to make movies other than anime films. like a mpeg mjpeg feature, ccd, sd cards and so on.

What else will i need to do anime films, such as i have been viewing the hardware list and have seen cards. will i need on eof these?

thanks any help is apreciated.

Under $2000 is easy, I envy your budget. Get a DC10+ or 500, they come with Adobe premiere. Taht will get you started off niceley.

well, you have a laptop, so compatibility issues can arise with hardware. But I'm no expert on what does and doesn't work with a Dell 8000 inspiron so... :D

I can tell you that the main ingredients for an AMV are RAM, Virtual memory, and HardDrive space. Lots and lots of harddrive space. Since you have such a nice budget, and I expect your harddrive is at least 3/4 full (who's isn't nowdays :D ), you might want more space. And like the Wired knight said, if you get a card for doing some serious editing you should be able to get a nice software package bundled with it (means more money can go toward a better hardware product or DVD's and the like)

I would get something like:

Athlon 1.6Ghz XP
512MB - 1GB DDR RAM
160GB 7200 RPM drives (2 x 80GB)
Geforce4 ti4200 128MB :O -cheap

Some sort of motherboard
some sort of sound card

DV500 would be nice :p

Yes yes, you can probably get that and then some for $1500

Are you going to use your current laptop ?

After Effects + Premiere + Camcorder will each up quite a bitch of that $2000.

There really isn't much more you would need unless you wanted to build a l33t desktop unit as I mentioned above. :\

You can't get a DV500 or a good capture card for a laptop. Possibly you could get some firewire ports and hook up a DV camera to it and pipe stuff in through that, but capturing just plain sucks since you have to worry about macrovision.

Using a DVD drive would be the best, and you already have that.

I don't think it would hurt to purchase Premiere with a DV200 or DV500, since you can get it cheaper that way + you get hardware you can use in case you purchase a desktop PC.

Haha, I'm getting

AMD Athlon XP1700+ (1.47GHZ / 1470MHz)
Abit KG7-RAID Motherboard (Supports RAID0, RAID1, RAID0+1 stripping and mirroring array)
512MB DDR266MHz PC2100 Samsung
Thermaltake's Memory Active Coolers
Thermaltake's Copper Shim for AMD Athlon/Duron/T-Bird/Athlon XP
Thermaltake's Volcano 7 Heatsink/fan

I have 160GB of space, and my dad's probably going to be getting me 2 80GB HDs for a RAID0 stripping array, and I already have a 12x8x32 burner and a 16x DVD.

If you want to make any sort of video, the most important thing you will need is more storage. I recommend at least an 80 gig external firewire hard drive, and a firewire interface card for your laptop. You will need the firewire card to get footage from the videocam into the computer anyway.

Those are the basics, closest to what you requested, but I'd go about it a whole different way.

Laptops are notoriously slow, and if you are serious about making videos, anime or not, consider this:

Buy a cheap desktop computer. Even a new US$600 computer will be a lot faster and have a lot more drive space than your laptop.

Don't buy After Effects right away. Most people here don't have or use AE, Premiere is plenty to get started with.

To make anime music vids, all you need is a DVD drive and the right software, which you can find lists of on this site.

To make your own live action movies, you should get a mini-dv camcorder & a Firewire interface card.

Read up on stuff around this place, then you'll have a better understanding of what is helpful for making videos.

Ah, $800 for a camera? I guess that rules this out:

One small problem:

Unless I'm mistaken both the DC10 and DV500 are PCI based.

That means they can't be installed in a laptop, only a desktop.

If you are waiting till January to buy/build a computer. wait till then to spec the parts, as lots of cool new stuff will be out by then.

Since you are planning to do live taping, don't bother with the DC10, which isn't even made anymore, AFAIK. You would want the DV 500 DVD, which had hardware acceleration for DV, or whatever replaces it.

In the meantime, you could work on an anime music video with just your laptop, and the software.

If you are getting a system for just editing, you might want to look into a Mac. I hear that Apple's editing software is far superior to Adobe premiere. Plus, Mac's are suited towards things like video and image editing. I'm not a Mac user myself, so I can't really comment on what I've just said first-hand, it's just what I've heard.

Apple's software also costs $1000. iMovie is free, but I don't see that as any match for Premiere. I can't really speak about the quality of Final Cut Pro, because I've never used it, but supposedly it's easier to use than Premiere and also incorporates AfterEffects like features.
