Trouble ripping Cowboy Bebop

Postby Studio Hooghly » Sun Nov 03, 2002 11:36 pm

I'm sure this has been dealt with before by a whole bunch of people, but I searched the forum and didn't find a mention of it anywhere. I'm having some trouble ripping the Cowboy Bebop DVDs (the ones from the boxed set, if it matters) with SmartRipper. I was able to get episodes off of the 4th Session disc with no problem, but SmartRipper froze up and died when I tried to get stuff off the 1st Session disc. Does anyone know why? Also, Bandai seems to have encoded the DVDs in a far more complicated manner than necessary, which may explain why each episode has 8 or 9 chapters, instead of the 6 it should have. I think that chapters 2, 3 and 4 are the ones to rip if you just need the episode itself, and not the titles or preview. Am I right?

Most of the early Bandai discs are formatted such that each episode is its own Title, which means discs can have 18 titles on them or other obscenely large numbers. Just rip each of the large titles using Smart ripper as a different file - I did this for my CBB videos a year ago and so I had 26 different AVS files (one for each episode) pointing to 26 different VOBs.

I don't know why it would lock on the first disc - Is your disc bad? Does it playback fine with a DVD Playback program but just not rip correctly? You might want to try VStrip or DVDDecryptor if you have problems, but I used Smartripper on my discs back last year without a problem.

My guess is that there's something wrong with the disc itself, although it plays fine on my actual DVD player. I know it loads in a playback program, but I haven't actually tried watching it that way.

After ripping the 4th session did you open the first session up with DVD player software before trying to rip? If you don’t this could be the cause.

The other problem (and I'm not entirely sure on this) could be your DVD drive. For some reason my Cowboy Bebop DVDs play fine on every DVD player I have found but one, a friends computer, and at that the only the last DVD would not play.
