Compressing to Real Player-format?

Postby Jukka » Fri Oct 11, 2002 5:48 am

I can take some video-clips (very poor-ones) on my webcam in AVI-format, but I have to add sound to it through VideoMach (a program I found) and after I save it all as an AVI, the quality of sound and pic are great; in a size of 320X240, but I´d like to get it compressed to RealPlayer, since with my experience, I can get an about 90MB AVI to less than 2MB size in REAL....

Are there any programs, that compress AVI to REAL or anything else, reducing the file-size *hugely*?

I tried compressing to MPEG-format, but the file-size only goes down 50%....and that´s not good enough.

If you have a link to some program on the net, that I could download, that would be appreciated. :)

You need to buy RealProducer... or I think its called something along those lines... you get it from the site you got your realplayer at. Real format sucks though, you should just use DivX instead.

0 for 2 zarxrax ;P
A. Helix producer basic from www.realnetworks.com (its there somewhere) is free, and does what you need.
and 2. RealVideo 9 is very much equal to if not better than XviD and DivX3.11 SBC or 5 at datarates like 1000 kbps, and it does excel largely at really low rates. Don't believe me? I've done tons of tests that say differently or you could go to www.doom9.org and look at the latest codec comparison and draw your own conclusions ;]

Yes, Real9 does look good. The only problem is that if you are gonig to use those datarates you should still probably choose and avi variant because people HATE realplayer.

However, for what Jukka wants, Ed0 has the right idea.

Strange, real player has never caused me a single problem.

Yeah but most of the actual RealPlayer content looks like shit. It may be able to look as good, no one likes to use it though, thus we're stuck with old 5.0/G2 encodes.

Nevar was a fan of Real, they purchased ViVo and killed it :(

Oh and the people who do use it for AMVs usually do it so they can get their videos down to 5Megs to fit on their little AngelFire accounts :p

true, but look on the bright side, its more likely to play on stupid people's computers than an ogg file. Having corporate support is handy at times :]

I became a fan of real a year ago doing quality tests between mpeg 1, wmv 8, realvideo 8, and divx3.11. Real gave the best quality of the 4 at the lowest datarate and looked the best with anime (at that time I still encoded stuff at 320 x 240) so I stuck with it.

I agree. I can play a realmedia file at top quality and it looks beautiful and it doesn't skip even though I use a pre-1997 machine.

For avi files, i have to turn down teh quality to min, which really decreases picture quality and it still skips every few frams.

About the only AMv's I download are those that are Mpeg1 or realmedia. Sometimes I download other formates, but I only watch them after I have converted them with TempGEncode. So I don't download avi's often.

It's TMPGEnc (Short for Tsunami MPEG Encoder), baka. I download all video formats, but when playing XviD, I can't watch them and fully enjoy them because I have a slow computer (AMD K6-2 450MHz with 256MB of RAM) and the XviD files often become out of synch.

..and this would be because the K6's had lousy floating-point performance. Although AMD came back with a vengeance in the Athlons.

Ogg not having support? When Winamp's had a plugin forever, and it's native as of 2.8+?

(Now, I'm more interested to know how they'll do with Theora and Tarkin)

yeah, you need the ogg dsf filters to play ogg files that contain video (the use of the name ogm is controversial, so I was just calling it ogg ;P)

bah. they better do something big to VP3 if theora is to be any good, I've not heard good things about it. We shall see.
For now xvid and vorbis in an ogg file is good with tobias' filters. Nice for backup with the internal sub and chapter support :]

content edo, content, he wants to get his avi from 80megs to 2... I REALLY don't think he was talking about 1000kbps real9 encoding. Some good extra info though!!

again, I encode low bitrate vids with DivX 3.11 (haven't messed with this SBC stuff yet...) and DivX audio... but edo 'd slap me around with the baka stick for that so I'll stop right there
