I did check out the information though and it seems like a lot of work just to obtain the clips (never mind putting them together and all). So for my first video I just may use other people's clips (I hope this isn't frowned upon

Oh well thanks (like I said before)

The initial effort does take a while, and you'll almost certainly get something wrong the first time.

So what? Keep on trying. There's almost nobody who can read a few documents and produce top-quality DVD -> [your favorite video format here] conversions. It takes a significant investment of time, and, in some cases, money.

Besides, it takes a lot more work to clean up downloaded footage than it does to extract clips from DVDs.

OK I think I will take the time to actually strip from the DVD, it's just with college it will probably take me forever, to do just one (I started using other peoples clips and it was actually turning out alright, but since it is frowned upon, I won't do it).

Also just one question.
In stripping DVD programs (I read the thing, but this wasn't quite clear to me) is it easy to strip only small sections of video from the DVD?

From my experience, it's usually easiest (though very disk-space consuming) to rip the whole disk and go from there. If you're really short on space you probably want to get a bigger drive- but it -should- be possible to rip only a small portion of the DVD. The problem will be knowing exactly which portion to grab- and unfortuantely I don't have any real suggestions on that. I use SmartRipper and generally just use the chapter stops to grab the chapter I want, and then FlaskMPEG to convert to segment of the chapter I want to a .avi file. I may give the direct-VOB-in-Premiere method a try on my next vid, but for the moment I like my way, it allows me to delete the extra footage that I don't want if I need the space.
