Encoding Quagmire

Postby The_Digital_Phoenix » Thu Jul 04, 2002 9:32 am

Alright, I have been using WME (Windows Meadia Encoder) and it kinda sucks. The quality is okay but nothing compared to MPEG. What I am asking is how can I, for free, encode my vids to MPEG's? What program is the best? I have tried (really tried) to use TMPGEnc and my experience has been that WME has done a better job. Better sound, better video. I can't be doing this right.

So, any help at all will be muchly appreciated.

No, you're actually right. WMV 8 isn't a terribly bad codec, and at 320x240 or low resolutions like that it dosent look too damn bad, but at higher resolutions like 512x384 or 640x480 its nothing compared to DivX and XviD. I ran a bunch of tests a long time ago and concluded that WMV looks better than MPEG 1 at the same datarates. Seems to me like you're doing everything right.
