AP problems (not your usual)

Postby Pwolf » Fri Sep 13, 2002 3:58 am

I have edited VOB file directly in AP using Ermacs guide, but for some reason now i am having a huge problem. I am getting low on virtual memory when ever i edit. after editing for 10 min i get the message and i have to restart. Its not much of a problem except for the fact that is taking too long to edit. I don't want a months worth of editing to turn into 2+ months. I have defraged my comp, and will do it again. i have about 3-4gb left on the HD. Here is my computer's specs:

win xp
600mhz p3
320mb RAM
40gb HDD

Any seggestions?

Well AVISynth does take up gobs of Virtual Memory. If you feel it's going too slow, there really isn't alot you can do :|

I would make sure that nothing is running in the background. Latest drivers. Try the AMV app program to get everything up to date. Other then that. You could use VirtualDub to seek through the file and clip out what you need. To keep kwality you would have to use huffYUV or maybe "lossless" MJPEG if you have one available(takes a little less space then huffYUV).

Just how much virtual memory is it taking up? Also you may want to make sure you have your virtual memory set pretty high up in value or set to allow windows to manage it.

Try setting your min/max virtual memory to be at least 2x/4x your RAM (respectively).

my vm was at 468mb then i increased it to 1gb. I think i'll clear a ton more diskspace and increase it a ton.

You can always compress the VOB file to another format that Premiere can edit easier (some sort of AVI).

Then when you're finished simply close Premiere, move the AVI file to some other place on the comp, and open Premiere back up again. Premiere will ask you to locate the file that you just moved, and then you can find the original VOB file and point Premiere to that. Premiere will accept and you'll have your edited VOB file.

However, you say you only have like 3 or 4 GB left on your comp, so I don't know if this'll work for you spacewise.

Hope this helps.

Pwolf: If you update to the newest version of AVISynth (v2.05, get it at doom9's site) it automatically puts a cieling on the amount of Virtual Memory it uses so you won't run out anymore - it'll just start chucking the cached frames when it hits it's max. It allocated the max to 16MB or 1/4 of your RAM, which ever is bigger. This means most likely you'll wind up with the 1/4 one. :)

Well i am not sure what is going on. I can open my project file but i can't do anything. i can open it through premiere (instead of double clicking the actual file) but i am getting memory errors from AVIsynth. this is very confusing.

Memory errors in avisynth are a known problem to do with manipulating the scripts in such a way that avisynth crashes - this usually happens (for me) when you slow down a clip by a large amount (like to 2% or something).

Your project is probably crashing avisynth at one point in particular, so it's probably an effect or a frame manipulation of some kind that it doesnt like. So, you'll need to remove that for it to work.

ok i am still getting memory errors. could it be that my RAM is going bad? and also the errors that AVIsynth has been giving me are memory errors also.
