The Black Line Of Doom

Postby Yogurtron » Wed Sep 11, 2002 11:06 am

While working on my music video, I found that at least my Evangelion DVDs have a odd black line on either side (mostly on the right side, but there's a smaller one on the left). When I clip the screen like Ermac's guide says, it mostly cuts off the left line, but the right line is still quite evident. I've noticed that most Evangelion music videos that are not letterbox, do not have this line that mine will with this source. Is there anyway way to get rid of this without having to re-encode the video with TMPG a few times (using the clip frame once to clip the frame and resize it to the full 720x480 size, and then using the normal crop settings to encode the file down to a 352x240 music vid). Anyway, so is there any easy way to get rid of this black line on either side?

You don't need tor resize after cropping.
352x2=704, not 720, so for making an mpg1 for web distro, you just crop 8 pixels off the left, and 8 off the right, then do a (bicubic?) resize to 352x240, exactly half the size of your source after cropping.

Are you previewing to a TV or something? A little misadjustment of your TV out is the most likely reason you are seeing some sort of skew in the left/right balance of the black side bars. Unless there is some really screwy mastering with those DVD's

Aye, that's the cropping I mentioned from Ermac's guide, to cut off 8 from the left and right. After such, I still see rather prominent black lines on either side. I think it may be on just how these DVDs are, but I find it odd that most fullscreen eva AMVs don't have that problem. But than again, that explain why many people want to do widescreen Eva AMVs, other than because of D&R, and EoE, because letterbox is that way and nobody would notice things missing from all sides. Anyway though, I was wondering if anybody knew a good way to get these black lines off of my AMV, without funky resizing.

Just crop the boxes completely off. So it will be stretched out just a few pixels more, its not gunna make any noticable difference.
