Confusing aspect ratios....

Postby Bushido Philosopher » Tue Sep 10, 2002 11:33 pm

I need some help trying to fix aspect ratios when editing and encoding.

As you know, some DVDs encode in 720x480 yet it does not show in full screen but in widescreen. So in essence the black bars are actually part of the video.

Since I know that 16:9 is 720x360, I was wondering how I can encode the video without those black bars and just let the player insert them. This way I can reduce the bitrate and filesize by a considerable amount.

So what should I do when importing the 720x480 full screen into TMPGEnc? How can I reduce it to 720x360 without screwing up the aspect ratio (or in other, yet grossly described, words, how do I get rid of the black bars that are included)?

720x360 is not 16:9, you need to get out your calculator
Just encode your video to 640x360, and everything will be fine and dandy. It should look just fine upon playback. I'm not quite sure I understand what you are saying about the back bars... are you saying that they are physically coded into the video? In any case, as long as the video is really 16:9, just crop any black bars and use 640x360, and it should be fine. If you want some extra assurance, perhaps you could try posting up an image of how it looks?

two mistakes to admit:
1) ok so 16:9 isnt 720x360...
2) im using TMPGEnc Plus' MPEG-2 encoder.

but whatever the ratio is, i cant get it...

i clip the video to the frame size that I want, but it won't go to 16:9. I know its not the original apsect ratio, but its as close as you can get. I've tried everything but I keep getting a full screen movie. Everything looks all stretched out. I'm prolly doing something stupidly wrong. So someone please correct me.

And yes, the black bars are physically coded into the video. I wanna get rid of these so as to not have to have a big file just because of those unneeded bars.

Under the "advanced" tab in tmpg settings, make sure "source aspect ratio" is 16:9 525 line ntsc, and "video arrange method" is full screen (keep aspect ratio). Then below there, you can use the "clip frame" filter to cut off the black bars. Does this help?

hmm....apparently it can only been seen correctly through 720x480 anyway....

oh well...i give up. i've tried every single combo i can think of but no luck. thanks anyways though.
