However, Premiere slows down quite a bit, and this would make the editing process much more tedious and difficult than it already is. Does anyone know of any better ways to do this, or is this it?

Vegeta for president wrote:What I do is make low quality avi versions (encoded in something like indeo or whatever at a low resolution and low quality standard) and edit with those. When I'm done I move the file and premiere asks if you want to look for it manually so you do. Then just choose the AVS file to replace it and voila you've got all the right dvd stuff in the right place.

Just make sure the low res video is the same resolution as your avisynth version.

If you want some better guides to work with, (or at least i think they are), then I suggest that you go to either of these places:
http://nickyguides.digital-digest.com/index.htm
(my personal recommendation)
http://www.vcdhelp.com/
(another site filled to the brim with good info)

Don't ever, EVER, insult ErMaC's guides! But seriously, all the guides at VCDHelp suck in my opinion, and the ones at the nickyguides site suck. ErMaC's method is the easiest in my opinion, but it takes time if you have a slow PC like I do.
