I'm insane, it's a After Effects video

Postby danielwang » Sat Aug 24, 2002 8:11 pm

Help! I'm totally insame and i'm trying to do a video with billions of cool effects using only Adobe After Effects, Flash MX and a pad of grid paper to do mappings! I am a total newbie with only 2 months experience on After Effects and I haven't read the manual because my copy is just a CD with no box because I had to get it through return fraud!

So I started by dragginfg in my Videos, I have to figure out how to get rid of the sound and make everything fit into a fake letterbox! Plus, I'm trying to use a script to get rid of dynamic removal-resistant watermarks by adding different degrees of darkness to those damn cable companies logo where they lighten up in the face of a logo, but it's just black! Geez do I have to make my video even smaller to get rid of it? (gets flames)

Second of all, I want to do automatic frame dropping to, say, slowly speed up a clip, make a 4 second clip fit into 3, change the clips to fit the projection perfectly. Instead of having to edit 48 individual frames, is it possible to, say, tell AE to drop every fourth frame for 4 seconds, etc?

Also on my list are effects such as field mappings, how do I map field colors to different frames? What about delayed clips? Say, I want to take a clip and put it into my video, the top of my video shows the top of the clip, the bottom of the field shows the same clip except delayed by 1/8 second and slightly lower position on the original. Like this:

Clip:
A
B
C
D
E

My Video:
A
B
C
_
B
C
D

And changing this dynamically, such as moving down, say I want, by the end of the clip, it should show:
A
B
C
|
C
D
E

I know how to edit. I's just that witout clever things like changing the speed of a clip, you'r not going to get by with a MP3-ed song and about 2 hours of downloaded real media footage (exaggeration, but not my much).

When you say drop do you mean drop as in remove, or do you want it to hold that frame?

Or do you want it to drop that frame every 4th second?

remove every one out of four frames, or fitting some sort of pattern. Removing one out of every four frames reduces by 1/4, getting 4 second clips to fit smoothly somewhat into 3. Useful I bet

I believe that the [b]PosterizeTime[\b] filter should be of some use in this case. Anyway, if I were you, I wouldn't use AE to make a video... too much work and not really many space for the "fine tuning" synch. I think it's still better to edit in Premiere and then post process in AE, but this is just my .02$ :p
You should never underestimate the predictability of stupidity.

Avisynth.

SelectEvery(4,0,1,2) does what you want I think.

By the way, how do you get your source into AE? I've followed ErMac's guide to get it into Premiere, but no go w/ AE..won't accept it. Anyone know how this is done?

RTFM

He probably doesn't have a manual, jbone, as most WAREZ copies don't come with the manual or such.

Yeah..I was wondering which manual you're referring to...and what is WAREZ? Maybe I should do a search on that...anyway, I've tried importing my .avs file into AE but it just don't work. What software do I need or where can I find information on this?

You could try Time Remapping. It helps you shorten clips and such as well as change the speed and durations of certain frames. You might want to read the online manual about it if you don't have the actual manual.

Yes I know what time remapping is, its mapping references and getting a program to drop frames to meet that. Except sometimes apps screw up on wierd numbers, they drop after 5, then after 6, making look jiggly. But thats unavoidable, im looking for an advanced solution that will allow for rate changes, e.g. change the rate continuously so speeds up: like frames

A B C D E F G H I J K L M N O P

to

A * B C * D E F * G H I J * K L M N O * P

I thought it really is like that, the AE will let you do things. But online manaul no good b/c not like Macromedia they have in proggie tutorial. This is a fully licensed version, but just obtained shadily and I would have to pay extra $ for docset, why not get a book with that kind of cash?

Thanks guys! Now I at least know how to do the Basic Stuff.
Will try to write apps for this later, to make time remap more smarter and look good, so all of you can use!
