Need Help With ripping DVD footage on a Mac

Postby Snake72786 » Sat Aug 10, 2002 9:28 pm

I love to make AMVs, and i used to use VHS for my source footage. I have attempted to make 2 vids with DVD so far, and while I was able to finish them, they looked really bad. First I used DVD extracter to get my clips (It was hard to find the clips I wanted) then i converted the MPEG2s with MPEG2 Converter. After that I realized That the sections of Video I had left had way too much "extra" footage on it that i didnt need (because i took huge sections from dvd extractor since i didnt know where the clips i wanted were). The only way that I knew of to trim them down was to use Media Cleaner. Thats what made my clips look bad. So anyway heres my questions.

1. Is there an easy way too find the clips you want on DVD Extractor?
2. Is there a better/easier way to trim them down?
3. What would be the best process for getting clips? (might be answered by the first two questions.

Thanks a lot and sorry if i dont make much sense.

BTW i havent used a-m-v.org for a LOOOONG time and I just sighned on today and looked at my last visit to the forums, and it was EXACTLY 1 year ago to the day. Wow what timing!

I can't really answer your questions since I don't use a Mac, but someone recently posted a guide on making AMVs for the Mac:

Maybe that will help ;)

1. The easiest thing to do is to extract the chapters that contain the clips you want. There is no "easy" way to grab just a scene or two and you would be better off editing out the extra stuff after extraction and decoding.

2. QuickTime Pro is probably the best way to trim clips before you start the editing process. Once the DVD chapters are extracted and decoded you should be able to open the deocded file in QuickTime. They just copy and paste out the section you want, resave the QT movie with just the clips you want, then trash the original decoded movie if you want (I would keep it unless you need the hard drive space, never know when you'll want another scene from it).

3. Briefly: Insert DVD, use DVDExtractor (or OSEx in OS X) to extract the chapters you want, use MacMPEG@Decoder to decode the extracted chapters, used QuickTime Pro to trim down to just the scenes you wants, move on to your editing program.

I highly suggest you check out my Mac guide (the one posted above) for full details. The guide is designed for Mac OS X but since you already know how to use DVDExtractor you'll be fine. Once again that guide is located at:
