Follow the bouncing ball.

Postby WhoIsTheFly » Tue Jul 30, 2002 1:41 pm

I'm just conceptualizing a video and I want to use the old-fashioned "follow the bouncing ball" device at the bottom of the screen to have the audience sing along. I'm sure I can put the lyrics in as titles in Premiere. Has anyone ever tried or seen a video where someone animated a bouncing ball along the lyrics?

ideas?

Create the ball in Photoshop with a transparent background!

Import to Premiere.

Figure out the motion controls... or actually what'd be better is to use the transform effect that's under "Perspective"(keyframed of course).

Then you just need to synch it up right.

I'd probably add the text first.. Then animate the ball after the text is in place.

It's be MUCH easier to do with After Effects, I think. You can only go in straight lines in premiere, which isnt really what you need.

However, if you really want to do it in premiere - I'd do this:

Make a ball with a pure 255 green background. Import it into premiere and do motion settings as follows:

- Set "fill background as the same as the green"

- Use the ball to move up using "decelerate" and then down using "accelerate". Do not move anything left or right - just have it moving up and down.

This will do the vertical motion. Copy this 5 or 6 times in a row and then export that area as a huffYUV (or any lossless) avi.

Import this avi, choose Transparency "green screen" and then use motion settings to move the ball from left to right, which will give you the full bouncing action that you need. I think.

It's not quite simple harmonic motion, but it'll do.

Ha ha ha...

My version is l33t.

I made a <a href="http://coolantx.hn.org/media2/bounce.avi">demo of it ;)

That was with the Transform tool, with the position value keyframed to where I wanted to put the ball.

The ball was a red ball on a 640x480 canvas with a alpha background.
The title was made in Premiere using the title tool.
The picture in the background is lovely Misato.

Using the Alt key and dragging the scrub line along helped in viewing where the ball was headed. It's best to put in the begining keyframe and the ending keyframe first, that way all you need to do is adjust the height as needed as premiere automatically will start dragging the ball from the left to the right thanks to the keyframing.

That's yet another example of why an edit button would be useful.

Hehe, that's my favorite Evangelion poster, ever. It's hanging in my bedroom.

klinky, that's awesome, thanks for the lesson.
