What do you use for TMPGEnc??

Postby Bushido Philosopher » Fri Jul 26, 2002 2:29 am

What method and bitrate setting(s) so you use for TMPGEnc on MPEG-1?

I've been trying to experiment myself, but some things just don't seem right. I get the feeling that it's not as good as it should be, yet I do not want it to be almost as big as the VOB it came from.

So what settings do you suggest I do to get the best out of it? I'm not too concerned about the file size unless it gets almost as big as the original VOB. that would almost be useless right?

(I'm working with full 720 x 480 Automatic VBR (CQ_VBR) -- quality at 100%, 5000 max bitrate, 300 minimum bitrate.) Tell the rate control mode and bitrate, or unless u totally disagree with me gimme the whole works.)

Constant Quality at 100% isn't really a very good idea.

You'll get much better results by doing vbr 2-pass and manually keyframing your video as suggested by ErMaC's guide.

Also, make sure you have motion compensation set to highest (slowest).

Also, there isn't really much to be gained by encoding at a high resolution like that - mpeg isn't really that good at high res.

I don't really know what you mean by you're not worried about filesize - can you give a desired filesize because if you really want to do fullscreen then you could use mpeg2 which will give much nicer results. I think if you tell us the kind of file you are wanting to make we will be able to tell you the best settings.

well let's see...

in past times i've tried using 2-pass VBR at 352x240 like ErMac's guide, but for some reason the seek time like skyrockets. i've tried putting keyframes every 15 frames almost and it still doesnt help.

i'm just trying to make it look the best it can possibly be with a good seek time. i dont care about the file size if i have to make it big, as long as it isnt as big as the VOB file that I'm converting in the first place.

huh.....apparently the newer version doesnt do that now or something.
well if i want to do 2-pass then what settings do you suggest?

at ErMaC's suggested of 3000 max and 2000 average, i still notice some places with video noise (or whatever you call that fuzzy stuff hat looks bad).
