Yeah a pretty stupid question, how do you do flashes in a AMV like say in Evangelion - Engel: on the beat when Auska turns around it flashes with black how do you do that?

Carefully.

The way I'd think would be the most done would be to just save a straight black image in the size you need and just keep repeating that one black image as long as needed... Most video editing software will probably have a "fade" option, where you can set the fade time to something really short, or something similar.

Fade in and out of a black slide. Most video editor programs have color slides you can adjust.
You just cross fade in and out of it for the effect.

It depends on the type of editor you are using but most have Video A and B timelines and one in between. That is the one you'd use for the crossfade effect and put your color slide into one of the timelines.

I don't know what video editor you are using..this is based on the Ifinish, Premiere, Media 100, Media Studio..etc... type software.

If you're using windows media maker or something like that...then I have no clue what process to go through. Hoped this helped.

Fade in and fade out rapidly on a white or black image depending on what kind of flash you want. Just edit them down to what you need and place where needed.
