Mac would mean no 8800 option ?

Postby remsleep » Wed Feb 14, 2007 6:47 pm

I am ignorant of the current Mac universe, but am strongly considering the switch when Adobe does their next major release that they've announced for mid-2007.

Out of curiosity, I just took a look at the Mac options, and it seems that even today you can only have a 7300 or else the Quadro? Can this really be true -- I could not, for instance, even have a 7800 (to get OpenGL 2.0 in AE (if I had AE7)) in a Mac today if I wanted? Do people just use "unsupported" cards and they happen to work anyway, or is it really the case that you are asking for trouble if you venture beyond the specific options available from Apple? By mid-2007, is it likely I will have an 8800 as an option?

I wouldnt count on it working right

I know ATI have the x1900 mac edition out
that might be a better substitute

Im not sure why you would put a 8800GTX in a mac anyway
it seems like a waste to me :p

7800GT's are also available for Mac's. Also, I believe I remember reading somewhere that PC and Mac cards are essentially the same, just that they have different BIOSs. There is a company that will flash the Mac version of the BIOS onto a "normal" card for a small fee, as long as there actually is a Mac BIOS version. I forget what company it was though...

If you want a Mac I'd suggest you go with Final Cut Pro instead of Adobe Premiere. o.O

As for an 8800 for a Mac. The 8800 is for high end gaming. You don't buy a mac for gaming.

I heard you need a good videocard when using Aperture and Motion and that you cannot even install them when your videocard is crappy (like on a MacBook) - is that true?

BTW. How handy is Aperture actually?

Um, I'm running Motion on a Powerbook G4, which is further down the "crap" list than a MacBook. Some things are slow, but it definitely installs and runs.
