Intel Duo Core 2 Chips Don't Support DDR2 800 Yet?

Postby eDiTiX » Mon Nov 20, 2006 5:44 pm

Is this correct? I called this store that I'm planning to buy a computer from and they said that intel duo core 2 chips don't support up to ddr2 800mhz yet. They only support up to 667...is this true?

The guy said if I get it...it'll make the performance go up slightly but will not utilize it fully to 800mhz.

I'm planning to get a duo core 2 e6600. The motherboard is an ASUS P5B deluxe and it says it supports ddr2 533/667/800...so...shrug..help?

completely false, that person doesn't know what they're talking about. (slap him for me if you get the chance)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Core_2_Duo

the motherboard is the main compnent in determining what type/speeds can be used. (the cpu to a lesser extent, the AMD Athlon 64 line using sockets 939 and 754 don't support ddr2, however socket AM2 cpus do)

a complaint about intel's P965 chipset is that it only supported DIMM voltage of 1.8v (at the time of its introduction, no ddr2 800 modules existed that met this requirement...most commonly requiring 2.1v)

the asus P5B board uses the P965 chipset...and does support ddr2 800, but you have to find memory that is rated at 1.8v

Which is a pain in the ass at low prices. Newegg has a total of 10 things to choose from the last time I checked, and 1GB sticks are around $160+ a piece.

So...I can get a ddr2 but it must have a voltage set of 1.8 and not the regular 2.1 because the mobos doesn't have enough power for a 2.1 ddr2 800mhz right?

Hey Kariudo, get on the messenger if you can.

I'll do some research soon as well.

not exactly, the problem here is the chipset...not the motherboard per se
...probably something with the chipest where it becomes flaky/unstable/unsafe if you try to give that much power to the ram I'm guessing

indeed
way to pricy

2GB DDR2 800 - cas letency 4 , is average of $300

it should be good with the 975X chipset on the ASUS P5W-DH though

the P965 chipset can only use ddr2 800 if the volatge is 1.8v and the latency is 5-5-5 or 6-6-6, but that ram is still a bit pricey (even if it isn't CL 4)

Id say get what you need for now and wait to upgrade for more RAM. Most of these boards that support this RAM are set to support 2GB sticks even though they don't sell any yet (at newegg at least).

The fact that they still needed to work with this proc (1.8v requirement) was implied. Those don't.
