Question about Codec?

Hi!
I'm new the the AMV making scene. I've been downloading videos for a long time and decided that I would LOVE to make one. I tried to import a video to Windows Movie Maker it says "cannot be imported because the codec required to play the file is not installed on your computer." Does anyone know what I need to download to get it to work? If this is a stupid question I'm sorry but I'm rather ignorant at this sort of thing . Thanks!

this belongs in video software help...but you need a little more information.
if you don't know what codec the video is encoded with you won't know what to get.

and if it's divx or xvid...you need to re-encode your footage (or at least the clips you want to use)

many people find EADFAG to be helpful
