NO!

Buy a $30 DVD off pricewatch.

Buy a $60 CDRW off pricewatch.

Both would probably be better then whatever that is.

They're internal drives. It's best to go with a internal drive since you'll get better performance from it.

If you don't know how, then find out..

Ohh ohhh, look gateway even has a tutorial on how to do it:

http://service.gateway.com/gateway/step ... 02,00.html

Also if you were looking for something specific, then please state so.

"I found a CDRW/DVD thing is it good?" <---how should I know?

"I found a EXTERNAL USB CDRW/DVD drive, it's SONY CDRW-DVD232? Is this a good drive? Do you have any other reccomendations for a external drive since I do not know how to install a internal one?" <---very helpful and you'll get a better answer.

Get a internal one and learn how to install it. You'll get knowledge + save money.

If you buy what's called a "retail box" product, it will have everything in it you need to connect it up, including a cable, instructions, and software.

If you buy an "oem" designated product, it might just be a baggie with the drive and a software CD in it.

it will cost a tiny bit more, but you can probably find a good deal at a nearby "big box" store like Staples, Best Buy, or Circuit City. the stuff they sell there is pretty much Retail-box only, and if you completely fail at the installation, it's easier to take it back for a refund.

Really, if you follow the instructions, its not hard at all.

Yes. But if you follow the instructions Klinky gave you you'll do it right. Then again, if you're too afraid to install it all yourself (You are a n00b when it comes to computers after all) you can always just pay extra and have it done professionally...

I've never been jipped off pricewatch.

You do not need software to make your DVD or CD/R/RW work properly in windows, well atleast to get it to read a DVD or CDRW. If you wanted to play a DVD video, then you would need DVD video player sofware and if you wanted to make a CDR, you would need CDRW software. Most any boxed DVD drive gives you a copy of PowerDVD and most any boxed CDRW come with some cheapo CDRW.

Actually, this thread reminded me to install the new DVD writer I bought a few days ago, so after my last post, I opened the box, removed the old CDRW & DVD drives, and popped in this new Sony DRU 500A.

You'll be fine, most of the instructions have pictures and are easy to figure out.

PS, don't pay more than $60 for a plain old internal DVD drive no matter what, even that price is a little high.
