Postby BlindNoir » Fri Nov 12, 2004 11:32 pm

I need a new motherboard for my comp and I wanna know what should I look for in terms of brand quality and features also do all motherboards have a universal size or is there different ones for each computer?

It would help if you could post your comp's specs, including those of the current motherboard.

Sounds like you need to do a LOT of research, or get someone to help you.

First of all you need the correct form factor to fit in your case, though most PCs use the same form factor. After that you need to make sure the motherboard will accomodate your processor. After that, you need to make sure it can support all your other hardware, which usually isnt much of a problem.

. I build all of my computers from scratch - every year sense 1983.

. Here are some thoughts to concider:
a) Who makes the Fastest Computers Available ... do they do anything PC?
b) Whose Processer do they use ... what brand name?
c) Whose MotherBoards do they use ... is there a PC version?
d) Whose Memory RAM do they use ... are they selling that line of RAM to the
public or not!?
---I've been very pleased with my Computer Builds and having a personel
recommendation by "the Fastest Computers Available" Company is a plus.
They actually said, "to try blah-blah-blah combination" - and it worked. 8-)
. A multi-processer Board is my choise ... but what are your needs?

Might want to get a little more specific than that. What kind of RAM? What video/sound card? Ect. Hard to help you with this is we don't know exactly what's in your computer. Motherboards can be picky. :P

I belive I have some information that will be most helpful to all of us. While I can't spend the time to find a motherboard for these specs, it should be enough to make a choice.

1.7GHz (CS)/.4GHz (FSB)/256KBs L2 Cache Pentium 4 Processor (I'd assume it's not a 7XX socket)

133 MHz Clock RAM, One stick of 256SDRAM (Possibly Two of 256 for 512)

On board video and 10/100MBs Ethernet

Source

One other thing: If you get a new motherboard you are more than likely going to have to reinstall your OS so you don't get an IRQ conflict from previous settings.

Yeah thats my comp alright, what i want in a new motherboard is to et rid of the sd ram and get something better (thats my main reason) and something that will work better and smoother.

So you want to take what you have and jump to DDR?

How much you looking to spend?

Replacing vaio parts means using vaio parts or completely modding your case, Sony is evil in that respect you can not just buy any motherboard they set things up so that pin connections and other items are not going to fit not to mention they don't always make it so the cases fit everything nicely they build there boards around the cases whoch means moving the ram, CPU, Fan sizes, Wire locations could mean it will not work as well. I would say find yourself a new MB for that model on eBay unless you feel comfortable with a dremel tool.

Or build a new system all together but I doubt your going to get something to work. Also watch your power supply make sure in the upgrades that you keep the right amount of power because before adding DDR ram you should be adding an AGP Graphics card that is not onboard (Meaning on the motherboard) that will give you the biggest boost in speed. I would say get something that is atleast direct x 8.1 compatable to handle shading etc. If you can spend the extra for a 9.1 if you need parts alittle less expensive I would say check the computer forums, or tell me what you want to spend and I will check them for you.

We kinda went over this on AIM. I'm waiting to see what his next moves are before I make a build for him.
