Starting from scratch!!!

Postby Miz Ducky » Thu Sep 02, 2004 12:54 pm

Hi all!
I am currently using a five year old, P3 450MHz w/128 Mb computer. It's been a solid trooper, but if I ever want to start making AMV's, I think I have to move on.

So I turn to you. Specifically, what should I be buying? I know the basic requirements for a working system, but what brands and component specs do you recommend?

At Jacon 04, people in the AMV panel mentioned that some video cards come with premier. Is that true? I haven't seen it yet. Which ones come with the software that can be used for making AMV's? if any.....

windows xp comes with basic software, there are also some good free ones or cheeper ones then premier or vegas, but if ur a student u can get a student discount on premier or vegas. im sure there are some vid cards that come with it but ud have to look around its most likely some promotinal offer so it might be over by now or some other company might have picked it up. as for a computer would u be building your own or buying it? either way u need to think about some things:

how much money do u want to spend?

what do u want it to do besides make amv's (becouse your curent one would be ok for that just a bit slow in rendering :? )

what do u want in it amd or p4(id recomend amd becouse they are cheeper and work better imo, but im sure other ppl will come here yelling OMGWRF P4 ROXXORZ or something to that extent)

so now that u have that down if u want to buy a premade one id sugets haveing one made for u by a company or getting one of the higher quality comany's comuters like HP, i would not suggest a del/

if u want to build one u need some basic parts

mother board (abit, asus are 2 of the better companys out there)

a proccessor (amd or intel)

ram (ull definitly need to go with ddr id recomend 1 gig of it 2 sticks of ddr 512 duel channel)

video card (nvidia or ati once again id go with ati becouse nvidia has been slacking of alot)

drives (hard drive how big of one? cdrw, dvd rom, dvdrw?)

do u need a modem or do u have dsl cable so the nic (comes on most mobo's) will be enough)

do u want a caputer card (if so look at video cards with one on them like the ati all in wonder serise or u could get one seperate.)

come back with some basic specs and we can help u out more.

Another important thing to consider with memory is that you get yours from a trusted name (Crucial, Corsair, Kingston, etc.). I've heard about all sorts of horrible things resulting from buying no-name memory.

Actually, if you get a motherboard with onboard video, you don't even need to get a separate video card. My EliteGroup/ECS L7VMM has integrated S3 ProSavageDDR video, and it's always served me fine. (Of course, if you ever intend to capture video from VHS, LD, or what have you, you're going to need a capture card...)

Sorry if that's irrelevant to the subject, but what I've been hearing is that 6800's, game-wise, are solid cards and outperform the new radeons.

Are you looking at just an editing-oriented system, or is there anything else you're looking for? And how much are you willing to spend?

If not a lot, indeed, Scintilla has the right suggestion; look for a motherboard that has most essentials built-in. It's not usually great for games and such, but it's no minus for editing.

i really wouldnt suggest on board video becouse its total crap when gameing also if u have a video card the proccessing power is used while editing makeing the whole process faster and takeing some load of the cpu. oem(no name brand memory) isnt to bad some ppl have bad luck with it but thats what i use just look for ones with good reviews. but yea if ur gona go with a name brand go with corsair or kingston.

as for the nvidia meh i didnt see the artical but from experiance and hear say from others along with soem articals iv noticed that ati cards seem to preforme much better then nvidias.

Oh yea, as far as this - yea, it's true, but it's not so much the card, but the package you're getting with it, basically. Look around; it should say on the website or the package of the card that it comes with it.

Last time I've seen this happen was 6.5 with my GeForce 4 Ti4200 card, but that's two generations back already.

Speaking of the 4200, it's a great card, to sort of address madmag's point. ATI was indeed ways ahead with the 9XXX series over GeForce FX, but nvidia seems to have held the crown with the GeForce up to 4 Ti series and now with 6

But let's stop it now before it devolves into an argument about video cards!

One thing I will say is that I'm pretty sure an onboard card that has even 32 megs of memory will ensure that editing runs just fine. Video isn't actually a big consumer of video ram

heh yea no need to get into a flame war over vid cards. ur right the video cards ram isnt neccesary for editing but if u have a good video card it will help out with editing. even in photoshop when im dealing with alot of effects and stuff iv noticed a big diff between my 7500 and my 9600.

But no need to go overboard with it. In fact, I think my GeForce 5200 (cheap-ass card that's just a notch above the old MX series, cost me ~$70 a year ago) does editing stuff somewhat better than the much faster (gaming-wise) GeForce 4200 that I have on my other computer and swap into this one occasionally.

Again, if you give a bit more info on your resources and needs, I'm sure we can give better suggestions.

well, here's the thing. the 6xxx nvidia series outperforms the X000 ati series on in games made with openGL , which isnt used much in games. however the few games its used in do tend to be of a high quality (doom3 the most recent example, awsome game) . ati's cards however perfprm beter in direct x based games. anyway, the difference between ati and nvidia's new cards arent that great and the biggest difference you'l notice is the one in your wallet.

about cpu's, your best bet now would be to get a socket 939 amd64 . thats the new socket for the amd64 and should last alot longer than the previos socket, making it good for futer upgrades. its probably the best consumer cpu for vid editing now, unless you wana sell your house and buy a a fx53 . anywaythe new socket amd64's should be out real soon, if they arent allready.

Thank you all for your suggestions. I've just purchased a 2.8 P4, and I'll be buying the rest (mobo, memory, drives, case) very soon. I'll reread the video card info when I'm shopping for it (that will be soon too). I've actually been putting this off for a very long time, so I'll probably be going all out (reasonably speaking of course).

BTW
Sorry it took me so long to get back. Hurricane Frances had me living without cable (first - no internet) then no power (nothing but candles Damn it got hot!) for a few days.

heh that must have been a bad storm i got rain from it up here in pa.

heh intel  meh to each his own. and as for video cards just take our suggestions and buy what u think is best, if ur short on funds id suggest one of the lower ati cards like a 9000 maybe. also when buying video cards u dont have to buy an ati or nvidia card just buy a card with the chipset u want. its much cheeper and works just as good.

Heh, I actually worked on these products and wow...a lot cheaper than I thought they'd be.

Anyway, sjcks they got a P4 2.8 b/c well....no 64-bits and that is the future. Sooner than you think :uhoh:

OK as for you video card question about what was mentioned at Jacon. was that they were talking about video capture cards, some come with either ulead, or premiere for example thiscapture card here comes with premiere 6. now thats just an example, but that is what they were talking about. I personally don't think its worth is unless you're going to be doing actual video capture (if you're getting it off a DVD then you don't need a capture card)
