there are always factors such as system restore and other windows apps that take space behind the scenes... like when i turned off my system restore i got back like 10-12ish gbs back

I really don't think XP system restore should take that much space. I've never used it though, so I may be wrong. I did a Crtl+A, Alt + Enter combo and the total listed was close to the total in the properties for the drive. About 100MB off actually, but it's like that for all my drives. A mystery indeed >_>!

There's also the Recycle Bin (which, I believe, doesn't show up even if you do show hidden files... at least not if you've got Norton...) and the page file to take into account. Those can eat up a good chunk of a hard drive.

my page file isnt 10gigs and i disabled my recycling bin becouse i have no use for it. i guess pagefile+system resotre and some other stuff could explain this. i never had this kinda thing happen on my other windows systems. i am quite disapointed that xp hides stuff from me like this. :x

It keeps doing this to me as well. I was deleting shit really fast the other day, and the space was literally being taken back up before my eyes. Do some registry hacking, and delete anything you dont recognize as being part of windows or a program you installed. Alot of spyware and malware installs itself without your knowledge and eats up hd space. Plus check your system for worms and viruses. They have a tendancy to replicate and chew your hd space up. Last of all, scan your system and defrag it. it worked for me. My hard drive showed 1.6 gb free when before it had only been showing 45mb. (this was on my 5gb system partition)

I don't know what's going on with your computers you two. I've used XP before, but I had system restore disabled as well as the recycling bin.

Randomly deleting stuff in the registry is a bad idea and wayyyy too time consuming. Just get AdAware or Searc & Destroy to make sure no spyware is on there.

I haven't really heard of spyware stealing 10GB of your hard drive though... :?

It wasnt random though. I went looking for keys of stuff that looked suspicious, then I followed them to find what they were pointing towards. They had give-away names, the way most of those dumbass search accelerators and shit that like self-installing did. Plus I backed up my registry and later cleaned and repaired it with Tweak XP.

yea i dont think im going to be messing with my registry. i dont feel very safe doing that. i ran virus scans and my system is clean i also ran adaware and spybot and i have no spyware. the only thing left to do is defrag but i never heard of fragmented files takeing up 10gigs :?

sorry for the double post. i found the 10gigs... seems system restore is takeing it up. but i like the feater i just wish it didnt take 10gigs maybe 3 or 4 is within reason but not 10. i wonder what would happen if i would bring down the amount of space its aloud to use.

you should able to adjust the amount of space it's allowed to use, look in that link I posted...

Yes, you can adjust the amount system restore uses by going to the system restore option (in the start menu, accessories, system tools) and telling it to back itself up less often. Change the number of backups it keeps and it will save fewer copies - but you'll have less dates to choose from if you ever want to restore the comp.

You might also see how much virtual memory you've set the comp up to use. I increased mine a while back (to get fewer lock-ups while editing a very complicated project) to 4 gigs and the c drive no longer registered those gigs as being available - once I changed it back, they were registered again. Now, just because it says they aren't there on your c drive, doesn't mean you can't use them - it just means the computer is counting some of those gigs as being 'reserved' so if you ask it, it'll tell you they aren't there for your use (to keep them free for the task you assigned them to).
