i got a new dule layer dvd burner. it seems to be recognized by the system and it reads everything fine, but its not recognized as a burner. well when it installs the drives it says NEC DVDRW drive but then once its installed it just becomes a CD ROM drive. i have windows xp pro. any suggestions on what to do?

You need a burning program to master DVDs. Get a copy of Nero or see if the drive came with any software.

i have nero. thats the problem nero isnt recognizeing it as a burner. the drive is oem so it did not come with any software. i read somewhere that you need drives to suppport dvdrw drives besides the windows drives (dont know how true this is) then i did some more reaserch and found that NEC does not have these drives up for download.

What version of Nero are you using? Perhaps it's outdated?

As far as I know, DVD-RW is no different from CD-RW, just so long as the software you use supports DVD-RW. :/

I do not have a DVDRW drive, so I am not the master of it.

Whoa whoa whoa... Nero only added dual layer burning support in v6.3.1.6, so yeah that's outdated.
