Analog video through USB

Postby Toxie_punk » Tue Apr 20, 2004 3:58 pm

Does anyone know of reliable video hardware I can run through USB. I had pinnacle and a firewire connection but my new comp tower is too thin to fit the PCI board in. If anyone could give me some hardware suggestions I'd be more than grateful. I've been working on this project for around 8 months and now I'm kicking myself for not getting a digital camera.

there were those external video card boxes, made by a company called sparkle. those are old and not made anymore I think, my only other suggestion would be to get a DV camcorder and import to that from dvd or vhs, and then send it firewire to your computer.

not sure too well on any of this stuff though.
System Info: Mac dual 1.25ghz G4 server, running Mac OSX Panther Server, 2gig DDR ram, 120gigx4 HDD, Pinnacle DC3000 Video Card, and a whole host of software goodies. Also have a 700mhz G3 iBook, used as a terminal.

I use an ADS Instant DVD 2.0. ADS makes several good external USB capture devices, IMO. http://www.adstech.com/products/intro/products.asp

There are some Boxes that can convert analog video to USB... but Kids don't try this at home ;-)

You will get MPEG2-Videos, so you have heavy losses due to compression and MPEG is not suitable for editing.

The better ones should be Pinnacle MovieBox or Dazzle DVC-150, but a good DV-Converter connected to Firewire should do better.

"G'huh?"

Personally, I find that DVD2AVI plus AVISynth lets me edit with MPEG-2 video just fine.

When they're VOBs, that is.

Back to this eh?

Is there a reason you can't just rip the files off dvd?

Probably your best bet is to contact pinnacle. They have an upgrade program that should let you trade your existing device in for one that will fit. Then you get to keep all your old habits.

Plan b: get a video card with an RCA or svideo input on it.
