DVD/CD-RW reads CD's and DVD4's fine, but chokes on DVD9's..

Postby Brad » Sun Dec 28, 2003 10:09 pm

Okay.. Really odd problem here.

I'm attempting to rip a DVD on my brother's computer. He's using an LGeus GCC-4120 DVD/CD-RW drive. Now, when I put in a normal CD-ROM or a DVD4 (4.7gb DVD), it reads it fine and I can rip no problem. However, when I insert a DVD9 (9.2gb DVD, for example, Princess Mononoke, Escaflowne Movie, and Spirited Away have all had this problem), it either:

A) See's the DVD, and can play it in PowerDVD, but when you go to rip it in any program, it locks up or says that files are locked or RCE Protection analyzation failed.

B) See's the DVD, but can't play in anything or rip.

C) Doesn't see the DVD whatsoever.

And this isn't consistent for each DVD. It changes each time..... And it's obsenely sluggish (makes the computer freeze and skip).

What.. the... hell.......

And just to prove it's not the discs, I can load and play and rip all the tested discs in my other computer perfectly fine.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What program are you using to rip the disc. Try a different ripper. The two best are DVD-Decryptor & Smart Ripper.

Also you can try updating the firmware of the drive and cleaning the disc to make sure it's reading properly.

It may also be a faulty drive...

I'm trying both programs. Though that doesn't really have anything to do with the drive not seeing the disc.

And its saying the firmware is already the latest version :(

What type of drive is it? I'm not sure but I think some of the older ones have problems focusing on the second layer of a dual layer disc.

It's an LGeus brand DVD + CD-RW drive. It's KIND OF old, but probably no older than my DVD-ROM, and it reads dual layer just fine. :\ But who knows, that might be the problem.

hmm... I checked the manufactuer's site. all of their drives support dual layered discs so I guess that idea is out...

You might want to try posting this problem in the doom9.org forums. Be sure to include as much information about your problem. They should be able to help.

-_- sounds like it reads it from time to time...

But thus, both programs aren't working and you have the latest firmware. I vote faulty drive!

yeah my problem is very similar to madmag's.

and i'd say faulty drive too but there's the fact that it reads non-DVD9's perfectly... :-\

I don't get it...

sometimes in smartripper you need to start playing the dvd before running it to unlock the whole disc. just don't close the dvd player until smartripper loads.

DVD9's are dual-layer discs and require more precision in reading, if your drive is cheaply made then it may not be able to do this properly. Also if it is not functioning correctly, then anything could happen really.

I'd invest in a standalone Lite-On DVD drive and see if things improve :o.

Well once again, this is my brother's computer, and if I was desperate enough, I could just take my DVD-ROM from my computer and install it in his, but I'd rather avoid having to do that every time I want to rip a DVD9.. but if nothing can be done about it, then ah well :-\

Well, I just tried running SmartRipper as the movie was playing and that seemed to do the trick! (at least for Mononoke, which was the only DVD9 I could get to actually PLAY).
