cd burner problem

Postby madmag9999 » Tue Dec 09, 2003 10:27 pm

i got a new burner for my comp its 52x24x52 and when i burn a cd at 52x it seems to take a really long time like 10min on a 52x cdr im assuming it should only take about a min becouse on my old burner witch was 16x it would take like 2min. also the burner gives me kernel errors sometimes. i was wondering if the drive is bad or maybe the ide cable or maybe they have more then one way to messuer burner speeds. if anyone could give me some insite about what they think i would greatly apreciate it

Are you using Win2K? The most common cause of the symptoms you describe is that 2K sets devices to PIO mode when you change drives on it.

right click on My Computer-->Manage-->Device Manager.

look at the setings for your Secondary IDE connector (could be on primary, but unlikely) under IDE/ATAPI Controllers.

Get Properties for the secondary IDE channel

under the Advanced Settings tab, set both transefer modes (or just one, if you have one CD drive) to "Use DMA if available" hit ok, and it will ask you to reboot.

Now it should work right.

PS: the disc won't burn in 1 minute, becasue 52x is the theoretical maximum burn rate at the very outside edge of the disc, assuming ideal media. less than 3 minutes might well be possible, though. Anything under 4 minutes, and call it good enough.

do you have UDMA enabled ? are the blank cd's your using 52x compatible ? are you using some cheap brand cd's by any chance ? . also, remember that the speed of a burner depends on how it increases in speed, not just the maximum (i woent go into dietail, but basicaly your burner starts burning at about 16x, then thier are 4 common way for it to increas in speed, and depending on the burner, that could make it iether faster or slower)
