Using Linux for editing....

Postby Pwolf » Mon Oct 06, 2003 12:57 am

This is mostly for those who use linux and cinelerra for editing (mainly Tryhill cuase he's the one who told me about cinelerra)...

Ok, i have been taking Unix classes for the past 3 terms and i now want to have my system dual boot with linux and win xp... I ordered a new 200gb hard drive to use for linux (i'll probably partition half of it for linux and use the other half for storage).

I want to know what distribution is best for editing (if there is one. i already have both redhat 9, mandrake 9, and an old copy of gentoo somewhere) and what other programs i might need and how i should go about preping my footage. I don't plan on using linux for all my future projects, but i want try something new and give it a shot.

It's hard when you first start, but you'll get used to it.

I don't have much advice in the field of Linux distros, but to dual-boot, you'll need Grub or LILO.

Grub, you use the setup command.

Lemme lay out the partition example for you.

HDA1 (C:\)

Windows -NTFS - FULL SPACE TAKEN

HDB

1: Linux - Swap - probably 2x your memory, or a gig/2 gigs
2: Linux - Boot - 32MB (64MB if a journaled FS such as Reiser or Ext3)
3: Linux - / - 10GB (Ext3 or Reiser)
4: EXTENDED
5: Linux - /home - 20GB (Reiser or XFS)
6: Linux - /var - 20GB (Reiser or XFS)
7: Linux - /usr - 5GB (Reiser or XFS)
8: Windows - NTFS OR FAT32 (Fat32 if you want to be able to write to it fully through Linux without trashing the HD)

To prep footage (in the case of DVD ripping), you should use tccat and mpeg3toc (mpeg3toc is in Cinelerra, I don't know about tccat...or you could use Windows to rip it with SmartRipper or DVD Decryptor, mpeg3toc doesn't care where the files are)

You'd need XMovie and CDParanoia (render viewing and CD ripping) for other programs...I'll let trythil take this now, since I've only been using Linux for about 6 months
