Need help with building an editing PC to use adobe programs

Post by advent87 » Tue May 28, 2013 11:22 am

I need some opinions and some help with building a computer that can run the necessary programs to create AMVs. For a while I have been a Mac user to which I have gotten along fine with what I have. However I would like to get a home computer specifically for AMV editing so I can use my Mac for my other video needs. I also would like the ability to rip Blu rays and work with blu ray footage as well. I plan to use adobe software as well. I am also looking for a reasonable price on components but still have them be effective in what I need them to do. I heard people have built machines for various prices. I am open to any and all suggestions with this. Some people are sending me lists of components for builds they are planning also.

Pretty much I am open to any suggestions so long as this machine can:
rip and encode blu rays
run the AMVapp and all components
run premiere, after effects and photoshop cs6
be able to handle HD footage
Be efficient in use and reasonable in price (again I am pretty open, but I really don't want to drop a ridiculous amount of money on this)

Thanks in advance :D

Define your price range and if you have a preference on form factor (i.e. case size)

Form doesn't matter to me cause it really isn't leaving my house. As for price range anywhere between 750 and 1600

So a friend of mine gave me the specs to a PC that seems to be a good selection. It is a little bit out of my price range (only slightly) but it looks interesting.

Here are the links to the parts and the specs to the build:

In order, the links are for:
Phantom Drives 3 TB external (USB 3.0)
BitFenix Prodigy mini-ITX case
ASUS P8Z77-I Deluxe Motherboard
ASUS GTX660 Graphics card, with 2gig GDDR5 vram stocked up to 1Ghz
XFX P1-650X-XXB9, a 650 watt, 80 plus bronze certified power supply
Intel Core i7-3770K processor, stock clocked at 3.5 GHz, easily overclocked to 4.5
Kingston HyperX Beast Ram 2 sticks, 8 gig DDR3 per, 16 gig total Note: Motherboard only has two memory slots.
Kingston HyperX 3K 240 Gig SSD, 6 gigabit per second drive
LG Black 14X BD-R Blu-Ray Burner
and finally
XIGMATEK Dark Knight CPU cooler

If there are any parts I can sub out to lower the price then let me know. Otherwise the total cost of this is $1,685.90.

Thoughts?

So, realize that that list...
1) Doesn't include monitors, keyboard, mouse, sound.
2) Includes an expensive video card that, while good for gaming, won't help at all with the editing bits.
3) Relies entirely on external storage, when you could easily get away with cheaper internal drives (that will last longer) in a larger case.

Already have monitor keyboard mouse and sound

What type of video card would you get?

What type of case and internal drives would you get?

Basically I am asking what PC build would you create? This is just a build someone sent me and it looked interesting but again I think it was mostly built for gaming with editing coming in a close second

Honestly, onboard video is fine if you don't care about gaming. You're not getting anything from the video card anyways.

For internal HDDs I'd look around for deals on the WD 2 or 3TB red drives (they're NAS rated, so reliable and fast)

Let me amend Bashar post, but a cheap NVidia graphic card with cuda support is almost essential if you plan to edit AMVs with Blu-ray discs, as the most reliable way to load Blu-ray footage (particularly if it's interlaced AVC) is dgdecnv, and cuda is a requirement for that to work.

That's a low water mark though. Mid range cards from 2007 had CUDA support.

I did say cheap, in fact. It's still more than an onboard, though!
