Innerworkings of Tech panel idea

Postby BasharOfTheAges » Wed Apr 14, 2010 4:26 pm

So, Something came up on the Anime Boston Forum about going into the detail behind the tech we use from a programming and math point of view with heavy emphasis on the algorithms and/or math concepts behind various filters and tools. Does anyone think this might make a suitable panel topic at an editor friendly con like, say AWA? Would you attend such a panel? Would you feel qualified to host or help host such a panel?

Eh, I think you would get some interest...but not a ton.

I don't think most people care about the math/algorithms behind how the various filters work. For me, this is pretty much due to every algorithm explanation I've tried to read being steeped in derivation and mathematic gymnastics involving some obscure property that is assumed to be known so it isn't explained in the algorithm (or something like having a matrix of numbers that doesn't have an explanation of the physical meaning or an explanation of the operations being done on it).

If you can manage to throw together a good visual representation of the concepts and/or math, and put "easy" in the panel title about 5 times (or "for dummies (don't sue us)") then I think it would be viable.

As for attending, yeah, I think I would
As for hosting/helping...the pool would have to be pretty shallow before you'd consider me qualified

I think most amv editors attending would already have fairly good knowledge of the stuff, and people who aren't amv editors would probably have no interest. But, I may be wrong.

I highly doubt that. If you can explain how any of these functions we use in avisynth actually work on a concrete level (or high-level abstract) using math concepts then i'd beg you to be a part of this.

I'm not talking about "a de-blocker gets rid of blocks" here. I'm talking about how the algorythms and formulas behind the function calls work.

Oh, I see. I think your panel might have like 2 attendees :p

not my panel - i'm hardly qualified to talk about it. Was just an idea someone inadvertently pitched to me that i figured i'd see if there were any people interested in.

Some of the developers of things like avisynth or x264 would probably be most qualified to speak of things like that.
