Uh... ffdshow isn't really doing any harm by itself, it's what lets your pc read your files. Care expanding a bit? Which software is crashing, to be precise?

A) Don't use old versions of ffdshow - use the newer builds from here (preferably the Newest entry or the latest of clsid's generic SVN builds, whichever is more relevant):http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffdshow-tryout/files/
B) If you are using a new version of ffdshow:
- Take explorer.exe out of the DirectShow control allow list, and/or put it on the blacklist.
- Turn off thumbnailing completely.
