Beta tapes

Postby CaTaClYsM » Sun Jan 19, 2003 6:34 pm

who here uses those? I am going to get myself one soonerthan I would a VCR, for 3 reason.

1. The visual quality is better on than that of VCR's and the tapes last A LOT longer

2. Since the visual quality is better recording things off TV is going to be MUCH more worthwhile since I have a satelite, so the resolution and overall quality is goin to be higher.

3. Little known fact about beta's as far as they are concerned there is no such thing as macrovision.

What kind of applications were you going to be using these for? Stock footage storage or something...because unless you are planning on some kind of production company where you need high quality storage options it just doesn't make cost effective sense. I guess if there is stuff on tv you really really want to keep a nice quality copy of to look at in some odd years then maybe.

Tapes and players aren't cheap either. Were you going for analog or digibeta? Sony makes good player/recorders.

Ah I see. You made it sound like you were planning on getting one.

The story about why we use vhs and not beta is an interesting look at economic hisory. The Japanese were good business people :)

I'll save money with the beta tapes. Tivo not only needs monthly payments but if the HD (which I don't think is that big) craps out then all the shows are gone. Hey Spamda why don't you go and tell us about hard drives crapping out? you have experience in that feild. :D

Dude :O

Just get a $60 VHS 2head VCR and a 4-pack of VHS tapes for $6. :\

Beta is just going to cost you more and really, I doubt you'd notice the quality improvements.

it isn't just the quality of the video, those tapes last a real long time. I'm talking dozens of years more than a VHS tape. even though my garfields 9 lives tape is gone for good. My copy of watership down from over 10 years ago looks better than most of the stuff I record off TV. After a few watchigns on the same VCR and the tracking is already crapping out and the movie or show needs to be recarded AGAIN or bought. and that is is I recorded it in SLP, if it was in SP I might just be able to fit 8 eps of law and order onto those 4 VHS tapes you were talking about.

They make new ones...but they are intended for broadcast.

But it seems unnecessary I think. It's like needing a lawnmower for your yard but buying a 6 foot tractor and a bushhog for the job.

no, not intended for broadcast, for personal home use, just like VHS tapes.
