dvd upconverters

does anyone have experience with these? how effective are they at improving visual quality (in general with dvd playback)?

i have a 42" 1280 x 720 display. right now i hook up my laptop (1440x900) via hdmi to play dvds. if the media player software on my laptop is upscaling the video anyway, is there any advantage to using a dvd upconverter instead? are some media players better than others at upscaling?

As far as I know, the only way to upsize something is to use a nice resizing algorithm and apply some sharpening, so pretty much whatever you use would be doing something like that. FFDshow probably gives you the best options in that regard.
