Removing Rainbows

Postby Chaos Angel » Thu Jan 16, 2003 1:03 pm

I'm working on a Lain videos, and the rainbows throughout the American release are annoying the hell out of me.

These

Sorry for the crappy-quality picture, my dorm ISP loathes uploads and caps them all to hell.

See the color distortions in the circled areas? Those are rainbows.

Is there an AVISynth filter or something I can do to remove them aside from importing the R2 DVDs? I looked through the guides and, while I may have missed it entirely, I didn't see anything for removing rainbows.

Thanks!!

Rainbowing is usually due to noise in the chroma channels, and dokidoki's Smart Smoother IQ (http://www.doki.ca/filters/) was designed to fix just this problem. It's a VirtualDub filter, though, so you'll probably have to apply it in post-production. (I'm not familiar with any ways to pipe output from VirtualDub to AVISynth, if you're using AVSes -- there may be one, though.)

If you read the guides it tells you which filters cna be used to combat rainbows.

The best one in my experience is the shadow filter (antiblink, I think it's called) by kurosu. It's talked about in the filtering section of the guides and can be found via avisynth.org
