Verticle "static" bars on mp4s

Postby 8bit_samurai » Fri May 30, 2008 10:34 pm

Or at least they look like "static" bars. They appear on the right side of about half the vids I dl, and usually don't take up much of the screen. They usually appear on vids with a 16:9 aspect ratio or something similiar. I usually ignored it, since it didn't really bother me, and most of the vids I just converted for the PSP (and they didn't appear on the converted vid). Now that I can watch mp4s on my laptop, they're getting quite annoying. I'd post a screencap, but it doesn't show on the screencap. Also, they appeared on Windows Media Player, VLC, and KMPlayer.

I was wondering how would I get rid of these "static" bars?

Can you link to a video with the problem? I'd like to check it out. Also what screen resolution do you use?

My screen resolution is at 1024x768 and the color quality is at (highest) 32-bit

here's a vid with the bars that cover about 1/8, which is usually the case
[vidid=151031]
The bars on this one seems to cover at least 1/5 of the vid, which is the most I seen so far.
[vidid=158828]

If ya need anything else let me know

Are you able to capture a screenshot showing the problem?

I'd post a screencap, but it doesn't show on the screencap.

This make me think it might be an issue with what's displaying isn't what the computer thinks is displaying. An error on an overlay or something... or even a malfunctioning video card.

That may be the case. This laptop has blue screened alot, and it happened quite a bit while I was watching something. Although none of the vids I watched while it blue screened never had the problem after it restarted. It just either had the problem at the start or it didn't have it at all.

If that's the case, then I guess I'll just have to put up with it. Thanks.

Try updating your video card drivers. That might help.

Update failed. Could not find a better match for the hardware. Would it be possible to uninstall then reinstall without any negative consequences? It helped a lil on my DVD drive, but that's something different I would think.

I didn't see anything of concern in the files. The one that I checked used anamorphic encoding, but that should have worked fine. The actual resolution was 848x480 and it was tagged for 853x480.

Anyway, going back to drivers and such, go in to your graphics card driver and see if there are any options like H.264 acceleration and turn it off. Sometimes people implement stuff that isn't fully featured, so that may be the problem (like how itunes cannot decode High Profile).

Well, it appears I can't change any of the settings in the graphics card driver, and it doesn't appear there is an H.264 acceleration setting in it either. Either that or I'm looking on the wrong place, which would be in the device manager. This is something I should know, but I haven't finished my classes :?

I've had this problem with a few video files before, but it just disappeared :|

Actually, they're green and purple/pinkish. They kinda remind me of those old throw rugs that been weaved together or something.

Can you try a recent build of VLC?
http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

It's strange that you are getting the errors you are. If it was a codec issue then it wouldn't affect VLC (as it uses it's own codecs). It might also be that the videos are corrupt. Have you tried re-downloading them since?

The bars still appear on the VLC player and on the redownloaded video. However, they don't appear on the converted video for the PSP when I play it on my laptop. The aspect ratio is different, but when I try to change the aspect ratio closest to the original video the bars appear again. Also, on the original video, when I change the aspect ratio to 4:3, the bars disappear. I suppose this is the closest as I can get to getting rid of the bars. For now at least. Thanks for the help, and everything.
