You need convert into an avi with an editable codec.
I'm not a speciallist but you have to import it into virtualdub with direct stream copy.
If you haven't heard of VirtualdubMod <a href="http://www.videohelp.com/tools/VirtualdubMOD"> Here </a> are some Video Conversion Tutorials.

And on this site is a great tutorial about everything you will need to make an amv :

I suggest you to only use the new version of the guides:
http://www.animemusicvideos.org/guides/avtechbeta/

Spares you some work and introduces you to new effective ways to work with your footage. There is even an section that explains you good ways to use your downloaded footage in proper way.

*slight chuckle* well aren't we honest
you're not even trying to lie about wanting to use downloaded footage :\ :P

...anyways, in addition to the above, vdub may be able to parse/open the file by itself, where you can resave the file using an editable codec like HUFFYUV; if it doesn't, you can always learn avisynth

things I usually suggest you have:
-the AMVapp [from guide above]
-the CCCP

ps. Bauzi, that link was already posted

I know, but he also posted the link to the old version of the guide. I just wanted to point again to the newer version of them. ;)

ok, well im not entirely new at the whole video making process..ive used amvapp and avisynth before so im used to virtualdubmod...so i installed the new beta of amvapp...but now i get an immediate shutdown of virtualdub when i try to bring it up..its never happend before, is it because of vista?(ive never used vista up until now...) its not even an error message it just comes up as it had to shutdown and windows is looking for a solution...

when you write r_eadfag (Without '_') it comes to this :
Code: Select all
Read ErMaC & AbsoluteDestiny's Friendly AMV Guides

So the "EADFAG" got replaced by the whole sentence and got linked to the elder one

But if you look carefully you can see tha link to the new guides on the "read" xDD
Just some coder issues there. Won't use the RE@DFAG anymore ...
