DVD to MPEG

buy a dvd rom and do the dvd thing. it works.

the process i take for ripping dvds (in order) is:

smartripper
dvd2avi
AVIsynth
VirtualDub
Premiere

I find it works well enough for me

by the way, you don't need to use avisynth to load the dvd2avi project into virtualdub or tmpgenc. both support VFAPI natively, so you just need to open the .d2v file, set your settings, and save out your avi file. (note, using VFAPI, you can only open one source at a time.

)

Regardless to that being true or not (I haven't tried it yet) the reason I use AVIsynth before I load it into VirtualDub is because its convenient and I perfer to do delinterlacing, 3:2 pulldowns, resizing, etc. using avisynth instead. The only reason I even use virtualdub in the process of ripping dvds is for the batch processing, and I could just do that in Premiere if I really wanted to

Virtualdub doesn't natively support it - you have to install VFAPI which not everyone does (I don't anymore)

I prefer the avisynth with MPEG2DEC option as well - for one it's much much quicker and more stable than the vfapi methods.

for ripping from dvd to divx I use XMpeg (very fast), when the quality isn't good I use guardian knot etc.

for ripping into vcd i encode the cutted vob in Tmpegenc

for amv-scenes I use FlasKMpeg

yeah I couldn't figure out how to get avisynth too work, or how to edit straight from vobs... but I use CladDVD XP and FlaskMPEG.
