Too weird: RealPlayer won't play AVIs

Postby Brigid » Wed Dec 05, 2007 3:46 pm

Yesterday I tried playing some AMVs that were in AVI format and got the following message:

"The video for this file cannot be played. Would you like to check to see if there is an update available for this video?"

Thing is, I've played these videos before without any problems.

Anyone have an idea what the problem is? I've got quite a few really fun videos that I'd like to be able to watch that I can't right now.

PS. These files can't be played in Windows Media Player, either.

get gspot (click the pic in my sig)
it should tell you what codec was used to encode it (and if you have that codec)

Um, real player sucks? Why the hell would you use real?

VLC Player will solve all your problems.

VLC is worse than Real, IMO (but then again, my Real Player never annoys me with ads for some reason). Get MPC.

Hmm. Actually, aside from trying to access the internet every time I start it this is the first time I've had trouble with Real.

If possible, I'd just like to get it to work again. But I will look at what you've suggested.

P.S. Just used GSpot. Nice little program. Seems I somehow managed to not install the DivX codec. How'd that happen? Anyway, it's an easy enough fix.

I'm using the same two for some unknown reason. Both are annoying me sometimes though, but VLC a little more often. I'm too lazy to try something new, so I guess they're doing their job just fine. :P

My only beef with VLC Player is that it gets excessively pixelly in fullscreen. It plays almost everything.

Scrubbing in VLC is the most annoying thing ever.

Are you sure you haven't messed up some setting? I don't get any more pixellation with it than with MPC...

And I second the scrubbing comment. That too is my one beef with VLC.
