Video problems with QuickTime (on WinXP)

Postby shpongles » Fri Aug 24, 2007 11:00 pm

So I installed QT 7.2 and .movs will work, but nothing else will...
I thought it supports mpeg, avi, and other video types. But when I try playing an .avi or something, I get garbled sound and no video.

Any suggestions? I reinstalled and have all the codecs from CCCP. And everything I google ends up having to do with fixes on OSX, not WinXP.

Quicktime on Windows will only play files that QT has built-in or third-party decoders for, which is a fairly limited number, since QT doesn't have access to DirectShow codecs.

It currently, to the best of my knowledge, includes MOV files of most formats, MPEG-1 (MPEG-2 support can be bought and added), a limited subset of MP4 files, and AVI files that use Uncompressed, Cinepack, Indeo, or DV codecs (some additional formats like 3ivx may also have QT plugins).

On Windows, using a DirectShow-based player is a much better option; I personally use the Media Player Classic included in the CCCP.

if you only want to play/see the files, just play them trough VLC - it has it's own codecs and nothing else to download. The VLCplayer does not require any help or support for over 90% of the files used today. 8-)

No, I don't plan on using it for watching movies.
I use ZoomPlayer for watching all my stuff, even better than VLC.

I'm trying out CS3 and it utilizes quicktime (sadly) and I can't import any type of video with it. So that's pretty much the reason, so it's not that big a deal, just annoying.
